during the pre draft meetings with him, their GM asked questioned dez bryant whether his mom was a prostitute or not.

http://sports.espn.go.com/dallas/nfl/ne ... id=5140313

5 things

1) im surprised dez didnt clock him, cuz I wouldve
2) what does his mom being a prostitute have anything with him catching passes?
3) this is the arrogance in nfl that needs to be done away with
4) this guy should be fined/fired for that comment
5) nfl should modify their guidelines as to what questions can or cant be asked during the predraft meetings

If you're interviewing for a job that is about to make you a millionaire I feel they should be able to ask any questions they want. How he responds to such a question shows a lot about him.

It's a touchy subject, but if you're investing millions of dollars into a guy before they even take a snap for you, I'm not sure it's off-limits.

It has nothing to do with being an NFL player. I got to give up for Dez. I would have had a hard time not taking a swing at the gm. Or at the very least getting up and walking right out of that room.

I am guessing they asked it to try and gauge where is character issues came from. Teams may want to know about your childhood and upbringing to fully understand what kind of person they are investing HUGE money in. If someone had little or no parenting growing up it is probably a sign of problems in the future. Not that any of this makes that question excusable, but I am guessing that is where it came from.

The question is of bad taste and the OP is correct that it has nothing to do with catching passes. But how many talents / 1st round picks have been wasted due their past? If it was as simple as just playing the game of football then fine. but that has never been the case and as what most said, if they are going to invest millions of salary + other costs on you, why not try and dig as far as you can? If the GM was not digging, he was not doing his job.

So why did Ireland give an apology for the question? If he was just doing his job he shouldn't need to give one.

That wasn't cool of Ireland to ask that question.

Also, I heard on the radio this morning that the TB Buccaneers asked Myron Rolle why he deserted his team. WTF is that? I would have told them F-U, I enjoy football, and I'm committed to it, but I know I'm not going to play football the rest of my life. Studying in Oxford will have a far greater impact on the rest of my life.

I agree if you have a chance to go study in Oxford then come back and play football id do the same thing that Myron did. So just bc a player is planing his future for after football is a bad thing?

first of all, the guy apologized. so they knew what they were doing. secondly, he passed the test. if dez wouldve clocked him, he wouldve failed the test and not shown any control of emotional content within his being. and now he goes to a good franchise, win/win

IMO, he apologized because he knew he might have gone too far with that question. Also, by apologizing, he doesn't have to explain himself to the media and put the whole issue to rest before there is more digging.

Every GM in the league does that. If they don't, they are not doing their jobs however; this particular question crossed the thin line between due diligence and unnecessary verbal attack.

He passed? I thought the Cowboys drafted him?

Well I did say it was distasteful, but I think the apology was more of a political correctness thing.

If the Dolphins GM asked:
"Was your Mother a crack dealer?" would that be wrong?

They are worried he may wake up one day and may want to pursue something else outside of football. (Like he did at Oxford) If he did do that he would be a waste of money and a draft pick, that is why they want to know. They are trying to figure him out.

Because in the Court of Public Opinion he was wrong and had to apologize to save himself and his franchise from being killed by the public and media.

Oh I understand that. Just not a big fan of people who give an apology once they are called out.

I agree with you. Apologizing when you are forced to is worse than not doing it at all. It irritates me the most when it is pre-written (by somebody else usually) and they just read it in front of a microphone.

Did he actually call Dez Bryant himself to apologize or just release it to the media? If he didn't actually contact Dez himself that is pathetic.

He asked the Cowboys for permission to call Bryant and he did apologize first to him. Then her released a public statement mentioning he apologized to Bryant and he also apologizes to the franchise and fans for his bad judgment. I think that is where it should rest. However, it is a slow time of the year so the media is going to suck the blood out of this one for as long as they can.

This question was way off base. I understand Bryant has a checkered past but what does his mother have to do with anything? We have no choice in who our family is so who or what they do is irrelevant. Now, if he were hanging out with pimps and drug dealers that would be a different story. Friends are chosen and who you choose to be around is a reflection of you and/or your character.
