am I the only one who thinks this rule needs to be looked at ....it just seems like teams are just taking shots down the field and hoping to get a PI call and get the ball at that location. it puts the CBs in a real tough spot. and frankly, it also kinda seems like the easy way out to move a drive.

would any1 else consider changing the rule? such as just making it a 15 yard penalty?

Yup I would be all for an overhaul of that rule. It's stupid to assume the player would catch the ball automatically and just award them the spot of the foul. There have been too many games ruined by iffy PI calls where because of misplaced hand, the team on offense gets to march 40 yards down field.

These days the best receivers are great at initiating the contact and making it look like the defender was at fault. Not to mention it might cut down on that stupid 'throw the flag' gesture receivers do every time they don't make a catch.

10 to 15 yards would be good enough

Mike Pereira was on the radio a few weeks ago talking about this. He said he doesn't like the spot foul rule and would go to 15 yards like college if he had the choice, but the competition committee doesn't like 15 yards because they think that would cause all the DB's who are beat to just reach out and grab the receiver knowing it would only cost the team 15 yards instead of a spot foul or a touchdown.

He said he doesn't buy that because that doesn't happen in college and I agree with him.

This has been happening since the NFL came into existence.

It's kinda odd that it became a subject on this Board right after the Bears won against the Packers.

Yup.

The pass interference rules are fine. The DBs have just as much right to the ball as the receivers, so it's just a matter of getting their eyes on the ball and getting into position to make a play. If they can't do that and impede the receiver's ability to make a catch then they should be penalized. All they need to do is get their eyes on the ball, then they're welcome to impede the receiver's process so long as they're making a play on the ball as well.

The stupid rule that never should have come into existence is the illegal contact rule. You've already got PI and holding (rightfully so), so why do you need a rule that says you can't touch (but not impede) the receiver? What does it matter if a DB's hand is on a guy's hip, chest, shoulders, etc so long as he's not pulling/pushing on it?

I agree that they should look into fixing the bugs in this penalty. I can see making it a 15 yarder bc chucking the ball down field and hoping for the PI is getting a bit outta hand

I think the rule is fine, like stated previously DB's would be holding people like crazy. If u are gonna change a rule, change over paid rooks and protecting the QB's like crazy.

DB's probably aren't taught to reach out and grab after being beaten in College because it is horrible preparation for the pro game. Now suddenly you have DB's being taught for 3 or 4 years in College that its ok to reach out and grab someone when you've been beat because its only a 15 yard penalty.

Now a pro team has to beat out of this guy the habits he learned in College. Heck they already have to spend team beating out bad habits that players learned in College in most cases.


Its just better fundamental football to have the DB to have some kind of accountability for what he does.

DB's would be reaching out all over the place in the NFL if it saved a TD. DB's grab and hold to save TD's even though they know they will give up the yardage all the way to the spot of the foul already. Only giving them 15 yard penalties for being beaten by a receiver makes them have no accountability whatsoever. Its basically a mulligan.

Fine in College for the most part, but anything can happen in the pro game.

The spotting of the ball isn't bad, the problem is how much more receivers can get away with as opposed to defensive players.

I definitely agree that receivers get the benefit of the doubt. Even moreso now that, the illegal touching rule has come into play.
