Coaching Carousel

There should be enough activity here to merit its own thread.

What I've heard heading into Week 17:
--Mike Holmgren is going to fire Eric Mangini and install himself in Cleveland, unless he can get Gruden. Brad Childress could be the new OC.

--All the innuendo in Houston is apparently true: Gary Kubiak will stay, with Wade Philips as the new DC. It's freaking shameful how Bum Philips campaigned for his son to get a job that wasn't open.

--Jason Garrett will get the Dallas job, to nobody's surprise.

--Denver will ask to interview Marty Morhinwheg, but the name to watch there is Jim Fassel. I can see Marvin Lewis in the mix too.

--It sure sounds like Jeff Fisher is done in Tennessee.

Jeff Fisher and his situation interest me. Where do you think he'd go? I have some friends that are 49er fans that would love to have him as their coach.

I think it's a bad idea if Marvin Lewis is indeed in the mix for the Denver job.

How do you feel the canidates that you mentioned for the Denver job would handle the Tebow situation?

charlie weis back to the NCAA in florida. I dont understand why he would take the same position as he currently has, except at the college level, unless he has dreams of being a HC in college again. I do not know if it was Weis, but the chiefs O has been pretty explosive and well balanced this year.

LOL at Kubiak keeping his job. Jesus. Norv I can understand a little. Keeping Kubiak would be like if Dallas kept Wade.

On Denver: I think they need to hire a coach that is on board with Tim Tebow being the franchise QB, but also a stronger defensive presence. I think Marvin Lewis would be perfect. Jim Fassel definitely deserves another shot, he'd be a fine choice. I strongly believe they need an experienced coach and not another newbie.

Tom Cable is out in Oakland per Michael Lombardi, who would know.

I've heard from two different places that Josh McDaniels is San Francisco's Plan B if Harbaugh goes to Michigan...which I think he will. I've also heard Jeff Fisher but IMO he makes more sense in Miami.

marvin lewis shouldve been fired right after the playoff loss. i knew that was the furthest he was ever going to take his team.

denver needs to blow it all up and start over again. that means go hard for the best quarterback. and pick up some lineman etc...

san diegos not goin anywhere until they get a serious runninggame. too many times in the redzone with nothing to show for it proves that they are too pass heavy.

harbaugh should go to frisco. theyve got some pieces in place, not all, but some. go to michigan, and he has to change drastically from a spread to a pro-style.

How sure are you about Holmgren returning? Tony Grossi of the PD said Holmgren might return as the HC but keep the staff (Ryan and Seely).

Also: Peter King said he thinks Holmgren will ultimately settle on Morhinweg as the head coach.

I'm surprised there's no mention of John Fox. I thought for sure he'd be a 1A/1B candidate with Gruden.

BTW--I can't see how Gruden could pass up the Browns job considering he'd be working for Holmgren, would get a QB he likes and it would be a hometown job.

Can you add anything else about the Browns coaching situation?

I really am glad Fisher is gone from Tennessee. Now there's no one on that team I respect and I can truly wish for them to go 0-16 every year.

It used to be the team with Steve McNair, Derrick Mason, Keith Bullock, and Jeff Fisher. Seems like they really went downhill character-wise after Pac-Man and Vince Young.

I think there is a lot to the Morhinwheg talk. It makes a lot of sense and I take Holmgren at his word that he doesn't want to coach. I wouldn't want to coach that team either--they peaked this year with the talent they've got. Morhinwheg would rather have the SF job; he's a Bay Area native and still lives there. But the Eagles playoff success could rule that one out because they seem hellbent on hiring someone ASAP. Holmgren knows he can wait a couple of weeks and not have a problem because he has an established vision and system and he just needs someone to run it for him. I still think his #1 choice is Gruden and Jeff Schudel (Morning Journal beat writer) thinks so too.

Rob Ryan will interview for the Carolina job and will get mentioned as a candidate in Oakland. Unsure what his chances are for either place. I doubt he returns to Cleveland.

Fox will get a job but he might have to wait a year. I think he would be a logical successor to Tom Coughlin with the Giants, that's where he came from.

Fisher's done a good job in the media of making it look like a Vince Young vs. Jeff Fisher thing, nobody is even looking at his lack of success throughout his career and the terrible job he has done in the last 2 years

I'm consistently amazed at how much credit he gets. He's had more than a few years where he didn't get the most from his team, but then he spews out a great one just often enough to keep the wolves at bay. If I'm a Titans fan I almost want to see what someone else can do.

Totally unrelated, but RichRod just got fired at Michigan. Let the Harbaugh Derby begin!

ESPN is saying it's unlikely that Harbaugh takes the Michigan job and they just had a guy from FOX 2 in Detroit and he says it's likely Brady Hoke is named head coach in the next couple days.

I think Fisher is a good head coach who needs coordinators who are strong X's and O's guys next to him. I don't think that team has ever been particularly talented either. I agree, however, that there are plenty of other markets that would never have given him this much time without winning a Super Bowl.

marvin lewis came back?

My Michigan people are telling me they don't think Harbaugh is coming, but he's going NFL.

Marvin Lewis shocked his players by coming back. Got a text yesterday from a Bengals player about an hour after it happened. Quote:
Damn dude Marvin came back. Jaw dropped. Bye bye Ocho!!!

We exchanged a few, and he agreed 100% that one of Marvin's conditions for coming back is that Ocho is a goner. He will not be missed in the locker room.

Heard an interesting rumor that the Texans have called Eric Mangini about their DC position. Now that would shake things up down here!

Tom Cable is out. Wow. Really didn't see that coming. Their best season in years. Maybe they think they can do better? Could this be that the Raiders are going to try to get in pursuit of someone like Fisher or Cowher? What are they chances they get Chucky back ?

Yeah, that surprised me. Its insane how Kubiak still has a job when Cable doesn't.

Jim Harbaugh or Bill Cowher better come to the Dolphins!
