It's the first head coaching job for the 49-year-old Rivera, a son of a U.S. Army officer who is of Puerto Rican and Mexican heritage. He joins ex-Raiders and Seahawks boss Tom Flores as the only Hispanic head coaches.

"I'm very proud of the fact that I am of Hispanic descent," Rivera said. "I'm very honored to have this opportunity."

It took a while. Rivera interviewed for eight head coaching jobs in six years. He said that experience helped when the Panthers called.

"I'm excited for Ron," Chargers coach Norv Turner said. "He has aspired to be an NFL head coach and I expect him to do an outstanding job.

This guy goes through interview after interview, year after year and now he's getting his shot. What do you think he'll do?

I like Rivera and I think he'll do a good job. He needs to hire a strong OC though. The Carolina defense has a lot of pieces in place already and now they'll add Fairley or Bowers.

Carolina owed him one after he gave them a playoff win a few years ago.

As a Panthers fan, I like the hire. He can have Fox-type success if the Front Office is behind him. The defense is basically there; experience a miracle to improve the offense and this team is back to 6-8 wins next year.
