Pick One QB for the future: Newton or Stafford?

Post#1 » by bstein14 » Sun Dec 25, 2011 8:28 am

Title explains it all... If you could have one of these two guys to build a team around for the next decade who would you pick?

Matthew Stafford or Cam Newton?

I'm biased so of course Stafford.

Did you know he's set to take Marino's record next week, of most yards all-time for a 23 yr old QB?

Marino had 7,353 before 24 yrs old. Stafford has 7,320 right now and has 1 regular season game left this year before he turns 24.

He just need 134 yards, which is basically a forgone conclusion.

If he has another 300+ yard game, he will finish the year with over 4,800 yds.

No doubt, although Stafford is having one hell of a season. Cam already broke the rookie passing record by Peyton, needs 107 in next week's finale at New Orleans to become the first quarterback in NFL history to reach 4,000 passing yards and 500 rushing yards in a season. Gave the Packers a hell of a time too.

Yeah Cam is already 22 years old but his rookie season is far and beyond what Stafford did in Detroit his rookie season.

Stafford is 1 year and 3 months older than Cam and did come into the league a bit younger than Cam. Cam obviously has a clear advantage in overall athleticism but I do think Stafford has a very high football IQ and a rocket arm.

I do think its safe to say that these two are the best two young QB's (25 and under) in the league and will both be in multiple pro bowls over the next decade.

Newton is on pace to have 8,000+ yards before he's 24. Not sure if that's the argument you want to use. I'm not sold on Newton, though. I saw the Falcons, who couldn't defend Tarvaris Jackson, break him both games. Once even without Grimes.

This is a tough one. I think I would take Stafford but Newton could be better. It is going to be funny watching it all fold out.

On pace, and actually breaking the record are 2 entirely different arguments. Stafford IS going to break the record. Newton is only about halfway there, still has a long way to go and will have to do it against a likely sophmore slump.

Newton's a great QB, but I tend to think his high passing yards get inflated because teams are so worried about his running ability that guys get left open. Plus they have a decent running game.

Stafford has neither a running game nor is a running QB. Its all on his arm, and teams know he's going to throw it almost every play, with double-triple coverage on his #1 reciever every play.

And he's gotten to 4,500 yds playing with a broken finger and gloves on his throwing hand for 5 of the 15 games.

This is essentially Stafford's first full season as well, just like its Cam's first full season. And Stafford has out-produced him 4,518 yards to 3,893 thus far. Through Staffords first 16 games, he put up 4,073 yards.

And when Stafford played Cam this year, these were the stats:

Stafford:

28/36, 335 yds, 5 TD's, 2 int's

Newton:

22/38, 280 yds, 1 TD, 4 int's

Stafford's offense put up 7 TD's total and won 49-35.

This is Stafford's third year, not his first. He may have missed a lot of games his first two years, but that's still 13 regular season games, two training camps, two preseasons, and all the practices, workouts, and film sessions. This is Newton's first year and he was drafted into a lockout. You can't pretend like they're at the same point in their careers. Not to mention Stafford came into the league with a much better foundation.

If you want to compare production you can't forget Newton's ~700 yards of rushing.

I like Stafford, but for the total game package, I'll take Cam if I have to choose.

Stafford, he reminds me of Favre

I don't care much for running from my QB. Most of the all time greats have done without it

The durability issue probably makes me pick Newton. Not to knock Stafford I like him a lot but playing with Calvin Johnson sure does mask a lot of things.

Stafford has already played with AJ Green and Calvin Johnson so far in his career. Pretty lucky.

Cam Newton wins close games, Stafford wins shootouts

I take Newton...shootouts are rare in playoffs

I find this to be a pretty poor example. Two defenses on the opposite side of the spectrum.

I think Cam will be far superior to Stafford. Of course the athleticism argument is there but look at the numbers Cam is putting up with limited talent on his team, Stafford has the benefit of probably having a top 5 receiving corps and the best receiver in the league in Megatron.

How did you come to that conclusion? Detroit is 5-2 in one score games and Carolina is 2-6. If anything one of Newton's weak points has been finishing close games.

I've got to roll the dice with Newton. Hes blown me away this season. Stafford has too, but Newtons upside is (Please Use More Appropriate Word) good.

Regardless of who you pick, I think it is fair to say that both the Lions and Panthers are very happy with their QB for the next decade. I know as a Panther fan I was so angry that Luck did not enter the Draft last year. So we took a flyer on Newton. Luck may be a great NFL QB - time will tell. But no Panther fan is still bemoaning his decision to stay at Stanford another year.

The funny thing is that when you think about it, Newton is not even insanely off Stafford now. Newton has 20 TDs to Staffords 36 but he also has 14 rushing TDs to Staffords 0.

So Newton has 34 TDs and Staff has 36. Obviously Stafford is more efficient with almost 4% better passing % but it is kind of funny when you think about it.

Stafford and it's not even close. I'll take the 23 year old that just threw for 41 TD's and over 5000 yards.

How can you say easily given the season Newton just had as a rookie? Especially considering Stafford is making a lot more money and is more injury-prone.
