The Coaching Carousel: 2012
I feel like this kinda deserves its own thread even though it's a bit late.
Anyway...
Hue Jackson was fired by the Raiders today, even after losing the division in the last week. I really don't understand the move, but I guess they want someone more disciplinary. Bill Cowher, maybe?
And, the Jags just hired Mike Mularkey to be their next HC, even though his offense just managed to put no points on the board against the Giants. Looks to me like Blaine Gabbert's learning curve may have just gotten longer.
With the Raiders being added to the list, we still have three coaching spots to be filled with the Rams and Bucs.
We also have no idea whether or not the Cowboys and Colts will make a move, as well.
Let the shenanigans begin!

Re: The Coaching Carousel: 2012
Little Schotty just left the Jets. Expected.
Hue Jackson kinda got the shaft. He lost his starting QB in the swing of things, then they bring in Carson Palmer for a boatload of picks, they expect huge things and they played 500 ball. Hard to fire him after one year.

Re: The Coaching Carousel: 2012
General managers look at more than just one game when they decide on a coach. Mularkey's Falcons looked horrible on offense against the Giants. However, that one performance shouldn't take away from the fine work that he's put in over the years. Jaguars wanted a mentor for Gabbert, whom the owner has declared as the franchise quarterback.

Re: The Coaching Carousel: 2012
Hue Jackson lost his champion when Al Davis passed away. Without Al propping him up he had little chance to stick around with a new GM from the outside. Good guy, good coordinator, not a good coaching stint with the Raiders though.
Rob Chudzinski is a hot name. If Fisher doesn't take STL I suspect he'll get that gig.
Kinda surprised that Jay Gruden decided to stick in Cincy as the OC. He could have had the TB job if he wanted it. Then again, who would want that?

To be fair, it was Jackson's first season as a head coach. He was still learning the position. With experience, he could have developed into someone that can lead a team deep into the playoffs. He managed to help change the culture of the organization a little bit. They really felt that they could compete. He simply couldn't change it overnight.

As a Jag's fan, I wanted Chudzinski but I'll take Mularkey as well. However, people in Jacksonville are throwing a fit this morning... lol

Re: The Coaching Carousel: 2012
Did I like Hue Jackson? Yes. Is he a good head coach? No.
This man is a total idiot when it comes to understanding NFL rules and he makes some horrible decisions in-game and his play calling is atrocious at times.
Although, to be fair, I would have liked him to stick around atleast one more year. But I'm definitely not sad/mad he's gone.

Jeff Fisher has picked the Rams over the Dolphins.

Re: The Coaching Carousel: 2012
I think that's a good call by Fisher. With them (most likely) moving the #2 pick and getting a king's ransom in return, I feel like he can coach that team up.
Though, the only minus I see from his perspective is that he might be the transitional figurehead for that franchise. Since their future in St. Louis isn't completely set in stone, I think his hiring is more as a predecessor to a younger guy who may come in if and when they move out west.

The Dolphins continue to look bad when it comes to hiring coaches.
They never get their top choice.

The Falcons named Dirk Koetter offensive coordinator.
Well, Dirk Koetter must be thrilled about his new weapons.

I can see your concern. But he's been through it before and he's a SoCal guy so maybe that appeals to him.
Still waiting for ESPN to explain why they ran the crawl that Fisher would be the Dolphins coach "according to sources close to Fisher" on Wed.

He came from the Jags, right? Yeah that is quite a jump in offensive talent.
I still remember him for being the guy that made Boise State relevant in CFB. He's a real creative guy, lots of combo routes and complex blocking schemes that work great if done properly but look like crap if the talent isn't up to it.

I don't know anything about him, but bringing in the coordinator of the worst offense in the league isn't exactly ideal. Not that he had a chance with the players he had. He'll have a hard time getting less out of these players than Mularkey did, though.

echoes of Miami hiring Brian Daboll after the Browns O stunk in 2010. And he got Matt Moore to be the 3rd rated passer in the AFC. Strange but true.

Re: The Coaching Carousel: 2012
Jim Caldwell was canned. No surprise, I thought it was going to happen when Irsay said something like, the new gm will figure what to do with caldwell. Rather than just saying caldwell is here to stay.
That was the most boring coach I think I've ever heard/seen of. I mean, BB's just a dick who doesn't like dealing with the media, but at least in his A Football Life, you got to realize what he really is like. I could imagine if you put one of those mic's on caldwell during a game, you'd hear crickets.
