Redskins may pursue free agents Vincent Jackson, Pierre Garcon and Marques Colston in the hunt for an impact WR

Several people in the sport said a leading target for the Redskins could be San Diego Chargers wide receiver Vincent Jackson. The issue with Jackson, as with some of the other top receivers with expiring contracts, is whether he will remain available after Monday’s deadline for teams to use their franchise-player tags. The Chargers, according to one source, have not ruled out using their franchise-player designation on Jackson but seem to be leaning against doing so.

Jackson had 60 catches for 1,106 yards and nine touchdowns for the Chargers last season. He has topped 1,000 receiving yards in three of the last four seasons and would become the Redskins’ clear No. 1 receiver. He averaged 18.4 yards per catch last season.

Another receiver who could draw interest from the Redskins is Pierre Garcon, a prospective free agent who has spent his four NFL seasons with the Indianapolis Colts. Garcon has not been as productive as Jackson, and has not had a 1,000-yard season in the NFL. But he had 70 catches for 947 yards and six touchdowns last season even with Manning out of the lineup, and he is likely to be in demand on the free agent market. Garcon reportedly rejected a recent contract Colts offer worth about $35 million over five seasons.

Fellow Colts wide receiver Reggie Wayne also is eligible for free agency, and one source familiar with the situation in Indianapolis said he would not be surprised to see Manning join a new team and bring along f former teammates, including Wayne and Garcon. But others in the league said they weren’t certain how much influence Manning’s destination would have over free-agent decisions of Garcon and others. It seems likely, they said, that the Redskins would pursue Garcon even if they failed to land Manning. http://www.washingtonpost.com/blogs/foo ... _blog.html

Should be very interesting to see who Daniel Snyder throws way too much money at this offseason.

Fitzgerald and the Cardinals would love to add Manning, Wayne and Garcon. That would make them instant contenders, I believe.

It's just hearsay at this point but I think the Skins are going after Jackson. They need to add a WR after spending all those picks to move up for RGIII.

Jackson is perfect with RG3 because he has such a great catch radius and he can run downfield patterns.

I'd encourage them to check out second-tier guys like Eddie Royal and Robert Meacham too.

Agreed.

Robert Meachem is my sleeper free agent. I wouldn't mind seeing him on the Bears. He has good size (6'2" 210 lbs) & great speed. Not to mention, he's not commanding big money at the moment.

Here's the FA report that I read on him:
Dynamic playmakers such as Philadelphia’s DeSean Jackson, Buffalo’s Steve Johnson and Kansas City’s Dwayne Bowe likely won’t see the free agent market because of franchise tags or the sides working out new agreements. And it’s highly unlikely Vincent Jackson or Colston will either.

New Orleans is trying to work out an extension for quarterback Drew Brees, and once that’s done, it’s likely the Saints will turn their attention to Colston. So they’ll ultimately wind up having to part ways with Meachem. But don’t let Meachem’s production in 2011 (40 catches, 620 yards and 6 TDs) fool you. His lack of mega numbers stems in part from New Orleans’ spread-the-wealth system, and the fact he often became the clear-out man to open up things underneath for tight end Jimmy Graham.

Meachem’s explosive deep speed is part of the reason he became somewhat of a decoy. But he possesses the physical attributes to thrive in the right situation.

Sign Jackson, pair him up with Moss. Gaffney actually had a solid year for us and could be our #3 or 4. We've got Hankerson as well as Anthony Armstrong and a couple of young receivers on the practice squad. But signing a top notch receiver makes everything easier for everyone.
