OT: Biggest Scandals in Sports History

Post#1 » by C-izMe » Sat Mar 3, 2012 2:59 am

This Gregg Williams thing has to be the biggest scandal in sports history. This brings the 2009 NFC Championship game into a new light and immediately should result in some lifetime bans and suspensions.

I believe this is the biggest sports scanda ever but what do you guys believe is the biggest sports scandal ever?

This has real potential to be a massive blow to the NFL if they start connecting the dots outside of the Saints to other teams. I hope the Saint get blasted by the league office for this.

The defensive coordinator of the Saints has been putting bounties on opposing players since 04. He gave extra money to players for knocking people out of games and at least 23 players have been confirmed to be involved. Link here: http://espn.go.com/nfl/story/_/id/76386 ... m-nfl-says

White Sox throwing the 1919 WS would have been huge if it happened today.

To be honest guys, this isnt much different than a defensive player getting a big contract for his reputation of making big hits. Don't get me wrong, I know this is outside of the rules, and basically involved a coach having his players trying to injure opposing players. I definitely think this is wrong, but isn't an NFL contract basically the same thing? If you are a player known for defense you are expected to make big hits on opposing players, especially the QB, and you get a big contract for it. Strange how some players get so lazy on a big deal, yet a little extra bonus cash turns them into killers? idk the whole logical line of thinking seems off. How much could he possibly be paying them. Dont they make a few hundred K at minimum?

The Black Sox scandal of 1919 was, and most probably will be the biggest sports scandal of all time.

Nothing will touch it.

They do make money from hitting but literately putting 50k on Favre's career (at that point) is crazy.

I started this post mainly because my friend said he though the Donoghue thing was bigger.

Didn't look that bad to me. Don't get me wrong... Totally unscrupulous thing to do but... he didn't really cheat. I mean, he didn't pay refs or opposing players to throw games away... He just gave "incentives" for his own players to play harder...

Take off one of those 19s and Sandusky would.

But no, it's nowhere near the biggest scandal is sports history.

What happens if they lose their draft picks though? Like, who would pick in their place or whatever?

i think your friend is right. this sounds like giving the players extra motivation to hit hard (not that i'm condoning it) but in donaghy's case, games were actually decided by the refs giving lopsided calls in favor of one team. i don't recall the saints putting a game ending hit on anyone in the 2009 nfc championship game and super bowl. and they didn't win anything in 2010 and 2011 so does it really matter for those particular seasons? note i'm not actually supporting what the saints did, i just don't see this as that big of a deal, at least compared to the tim donaghy scandal.

Forgot all about Sandusky.

The draft gets shorter if you lose your picks.

When you are offering 50k to take a player out that is when it gets extreme

That's Favre's leg after the NFC Championship game. The refs apologized for letting them beat him like they did and many people joked that a bounty was on his head.

With the penalties for illegal hits regularly topping 50K, does it even matter?

If they lose their pick, everyone after essentially moves up one pick.
