While seeking the counsel of his former boss and mentor, Bill Parcells, New Orleans Saints coach Sean Payton has broached the idea of Parcells becoming the interim head coach during Payton's suspension for the 2012 season, according to several league sources.

Payton and Parcells have spoken numerous times, sources said, since NFL commissioner Roger Goodell announced last Wednesday that the Saints coach was being suspended for the year because the league found that the team had engaged in a bounty program that included incentives to injure opposing players.

One complication is that Parcells, who was among the 10 finalists as a nominee for the Pro Football Hall of Fame in his first year of eligibility, would have to wait another five years once an interim coaching post is completed under the Hall of Fame's bylaws. One Hall of Fame official said the bylaws would have to be changed but did agree it is a unique situation that could merit discussion. The five-year Hall of Fame clock may not have to be restarted if Parcells took a role with the Saints that did not specifically involve coaching.

The franchise would have to adhere to the Rooney Rule and interview at least one minority candidate if the Saints went outside their coaching staff to seek a coach to replace Payton for the 2012 season.

I think this would be a very interesting happening. I'm not sure a few guys on the Saints would get along with him.

Thoughts?

I wrote about it last week:

Another name to consider: Bill Parcells. Payton is a branch of the vast Parcells coaching tree, so the familiarity with the systems is already there. Everyone, even this frequent critic of his, respects Parcells as a man of integrity and honor. He's also proven he can successfully coach in adverse circumstances. It also wouldn't hurt his standing with the Hall of Fame selection committee, many of whom find him to be an insufferably cocksure and belligerent jackass that hasn't fared too well in his recent coaching and management ventures. Humbly taking over a trainwreck like this and guiding a prominent franchise through a dark time would do a lot to win over some of those voters. Granted he would reset his eligibility clock, but he might need to do something bold like that to ensure enshrinement.

Am I wrong for preferring the playcalling to be in Carmichael/Brees hands' for the offense, and Spagnuolo for the defense??

Parcells would be a good fit in NO, but I really think they should use someone from inside the team.

He has his sycophants in the national media and throughout the league. His presence carries the credible weight of respect in that manner. I personally find him to be an inusfferable, overrated has-been that hasn't been good at any job he's held since his second year with the Jets. But that's just me...

According to Peter King it's up to Tom Benson. Benson and Parcells are about as different as Rick Santorum and Rachel Maddow.

If you think about it:

They're both obnoxious.
They both like women.
They both only dress in suits.
They both agree that a penis should only be used for making babies.
They both hate Mitt Romney.
They both have no idea what they're talking about.
The world would be better if both dissapeared and were never heard from again.

I find it interesting that the Saints don't view Spagnuolo as someone that's qualified to be a head coach.
