NFL Films' president Steve Sabol, after an 18-month battle with brain cancer, died Tuesday. He was 69.
"Steve Sabol was the creative genius behind the remarkable work of NFL Films," NFL Commissioner Roger Goodell said in a statement. "Steve's passion for football was matched by his incredible talent and energy. ... He was a major contributor to the success of the NFL, a man who changed the way we look at football and sports, and a great friend."
I'm legitimately saddened by this news. I think this goes for a lot of football fans, but Steve Sabol was basically like a history teacher for a lot of people. He and his father produced pieces for NFL Films that showcased the legacies of the sport and the people who played in its formative years. I remember getting up early on Saturdays to watch NFL Films specials with my dad instead of cartoons and Steve Sabol was always there to host, or narrate.
RIP to a true legend of the industry and the sport.
