Cops: Chiefs player kills woman, self

An unnamed Kansas City Chiefs player has committed suicide at the team facility and police are on the scene, the team confirmed to ESPN on Saturday morning.

Local reports say police are operating with the belief the player fatally shot his girlfriend at a house before driving to Arrowhead Stadium and killing himself.

"We can confirm that there was an incident at Arrowhead earlier this morning," the Chiefs said in a statement. "We are cooperating with authorities in their investigation."

There were no other injuries at the team facility, police said.

^^^^^^Thanks.

KCTV5 news is reporting two deadly shootings that are connected. Kansas City Chiefs linebacker Jovan Belcher shot his girlfriend at one location and then himself at the Arrowhead practice facility, according to Kevin Kietzman of Sports Radio 810.

According to the report, Belcher shot and killed his girlfriend and then drove to the practice facility where he shot and killed himself.

The first shooting occurred at 54th Street and Chrysler Avenue, which is 11 minutes away from Arrowhead Stadium. The first shooting happened at 8 a.m. The second shooting happened shortly afterward at Arrowhead Stadium's practice facility.

Arrowhead security has also placed the practice facility on lockdown.

Apparently killed himself in front of Romeo Crennel and Scott Pioli at the doors of the facility. He had the gun to his head and thanked them for all they had done for him, and shot himself as the police drove into the parking lot. Pioli and Crennel never felt threatened.

This is what I gathered from Twitter and from an interview w/ the Cop.

Kansas City Chiefs linebacker Jovan Belcher fatally shot his girlfriend early Saturday, then drove to Arrowhead Stadium and committed suicide in front of his coach and general manager, police said.

Police said the 25-year-old killed his girlfriend and then went to the team practice facility, where he shot himself. Police did not identify the victim.

Members of the Chiefs organization told ESPN NFL Insider Adam Schefter that some players noticed Belcher was troubled in his car, and went in the facility and told someone, before coach Romeo Crennel and general manager Scott Pioli called police and went outside to talk to him. Belcher then killed himself in front of them.

Before turning the gun on himself, Belcher thanked Crennel and Pioli for all they had done for him, police spokesman Darin Snapp said.

Belcher's mother was visiting the couple and saw the shooting. The couple had a 3-month-old daughter who was also at the house, the report said.

Authorities received a call Saturday morning from a woman who said her daughter had been shot multiple times at a residence about five miles away from the Arrowhead complex.

"When we arrived, a lady informed us that her daughter had been shot multiple times by her boyfriend, by the daughter's boyfriend," Snapp said. "She identified him as a Chiefs player."

Snapp said a call was then received from the Chiefs' facility.

"The description matched the suspect description from that other address. We kind of knew what we were dealing with," he said. The player was "holding a gun to his head" as he stood in front of the front doors of the practice facility.

"And there were Pioli and Crennel and another coach or employee was standing outside and appeared to be talking to him. It appeared they were talking to the suspect," Snapp said. "The suspect began to walk in the opposite direction of the coaches and the officers and that's when they heard the gunshot. It appears he took his own life."

The coaches told police they never felt in any danger, Snapp said.

"They said the player was actually thanking them for everything they'd done for him," he said. "They were just talking to him and he was thanking them and everything. That's when he walked away and shot himself."

Snapp described the girlfriend as in her early 20s and that she and the player had a child together. He said the woman's mother told police they had recently been arguing.

Arrowhead Stadium went into lockdown at about 8 a.m.

"We are cooperating with authorities in their investigation, the Chiefs said in a statement."

Belcher, an undrafted player out of Maine and native of West Babylon, N.Y., on Long Island, had started 44 of 59 games in his four seasons for the Chiefs, recording a career-high 61 tackles in 2011.

Kansas City is scheduled to host the Carolina Panthers on Sunday. The league has informed the Panthers to travel as scheduled because the game is going on as scheduled.

Thoughts and prayers to his family and to the family of his girlfriend. Just a heartbreaking situation. Also need to keep Crennel and Pioli in our thoughts. Trying to help the young man and witnessing his suicide is going to stick with them the rest of their days.

I can't even imagine how the Chiefs coaches who were there are going to be able to work tomorrow.

It sounds like the game will go on tomorrow but man I have no idea how Crennel could coach or his Chiefs teammates could play. I mean, you'll hear a lot about how playing gets their minds off it, but that's just not possible. And that he did it at the facility means they can't help but be reminded and haunted by it.

I interviewed Belcher leading into his draft. Nothing lengthy or intense, just the standard questions about workouts, teammates, where he felt he could play, off-field interests. I found him to be thoughtful and very focused on making it, very positive in his ability even though he was not highly regarded. I cannot believe he achieved this kind of success and still went ahead and killed the mother of his infant child and then himself.

Romeo Crennel just has to be devastated beyond words. He's such a caring guy. I just...

The game will go on tomorrow, and Crennel will coach.

It'd be pretty amazing for the Chiefs to win today.

Yeah I dont get this. If there is a moment of silence it better be for his girlfriend, not him.

Also, does anyone remember if the Redskins played after Sean Taylor died?

A member of the Chiefs organization said the players wanted to wear a decal today to honor Belcher, but they said it was inappropriate to honor only 1 of the 2 killed. Great call by the chiefs to not honor a murderer.

Well said. Nice to see they got the win. Romeo Crennel looked and sounded like a very weary man after the game, and I bet he treasures that game ball as much as anything he's ever accomplished.
