To clear salary-cap space and lock up their franchise quarterback, the Dallas Cowboys and Tony Romo reached an agreement on a blockbuster six-year extension worth $108 million, making him the highest-paid player in franchise history.
Come on, man.

Haven't seen the full breakdown but it sounds like it's a 3 yr/$55M deal in effect. They had exactly $24K in cap room before the deal so they had to do something to free up cash and there was no question they were going to extend Romo.
The numbers make me vomit in my mouth a little but I like that they did it now. Rodgers is about to get $25M/yr. Kaepernick and Wilson are both going to get new deals next offseason that dwarf this Romo deal. Stafford, Bradford, and Josh Freeman (if Bucs make playoffs) could as well. Dallas is sort of preempting the market escalation in a way.
That doesn't change the fact that Romo has choked like a dog several times in big games. But I think that's their rationale.

They'd be **** if they didn't honestly. His contract would have voided and it would have added like over 5mil cap hit as it did after the year. And they couldn't tag him if that happened based on timing. On an open market take a guess a needy team would be to able to offer him. As much as everyone hates him he's worlds better than the bottomfeeder qbs are and that's all that's really available.

Cowboys fans are complaining about this Romo deal, yet none of them have been able to provide a viable alternative at the QB spot.

Romo at times seems to get it. calls perfect audibles and reads blitz packages correctly. Can drive his team down at will and score and put points on the board. Its the reason at times, that ive went with the cowboys to advance far in the playoffs. Then all of the sudden, all hell breaks loose with some unexplainable sh**. Im not puttin any more faith on the cowboys.

Head coach has to reign in the play calling. That would help Romo reduce his mistakes. Same thing Harbaugh did for Smith.

He should give 1/4 of it to his parents for giving him an awesome star/action hero name

There's Matt Flynn... but Romo fails to play well in the spotlight. For him to get this much money is ridiculous. Restructuring was needed for the Cowboys, but Romo really bent them over a table because he knew they needed to restructure to have any hope of free agency.

I don't think Matt Flynn would have a 1/3 of the success Romo does in Dallas. To be honest, Romo is basically the perfect QB for that franchise in terms of being able to handle the media frenzy that gets generated by Jerry Jones.
He's a terrific regular season QB who, at times, looks like a top tier player in the league and deserving of a contract this huge. Yet, like everyone else has said here, his playoff follies still don't merit this type of deal.
I say you give it 2-3 years, if he tails off a la Philip Rivers, or just doesn't continually produce in the postseason, then you eat that deal and cut him. It would be a helluva divorce one day, but I can honestly say that Romo will probably be a Cowboy for life. And, he's better than Troy Aikman ever was, so there's that.

Despite his hefty contract, Flynn is still a somewhat unproven commodity. It's quite the risk to let a proven (albeit mistake prone) QB leave in exchange for someone that might not be an improvement. Easier for us to do it because we're not actually tasked with that job.

You really can't compare player salaries now to what they used to make due to inflation. Hell guys who make minimum salary now make more than the likes of Jim Brown.
Romo is the prototype no man's land QB. He's good enough to keep you in a lot of games, but not good enough to win a title with. He's bad enough where he'll single handedly lose you a game or two every year, but never bad enough to completely bottom out and finish with a high draft pick so you can pick a blue chip QB.
Dallas is stuck with him because if you don't overpay him, you'll end up with the likes of Rex Grossman at QB and that'd be way worse. But in a year or two the Cowboys are gonna have to mass rebuild as Romo, Witten, and Ware are all aging and I think Romo's cap # alone next year is over $20 Million.

That Romo contract has to be extremely back loaded. Maybe another restructuring soon?

He's been sort of the anti-Eli Manning. His best is definitely good enough to win Super Bowls with, the problem is that he never plays his best when it matters.

I just read that when you take all tax considerations into account Romo is actually the highest paid player in the game now!

When you talk about Romo it's almost like you have to consider two different QBs though - good Romo and bad Romo.
Good Romo is a well above average, borderline top-10 QB who can win games with a solid team around him...Bad Romo is an absolute trainwreck though
On a semi-side note, I love how Jerry is spending tons of money and messing up the Cowboys' cap for years to come to keep a team that wasn't even good enough to make the playoffs together. Classic Jerry.
