Denying interviews

Just read that the Tennessee Titans have refused to grant permission to the Tampa Bay Buccaneers for interviewing Mike Mularkey as their potential new offensive coordinator. I never really liked that. I know that they're under contract and all, but it just seems wrong to prevent someone from going after a promotion.

Your thoughts on the matter?

I agree with Tennessee. If you want him, pay for it.

It's amazing anyone would want Mularkey after how ineffective he's been in the past.

I know I wouldn't want him for my team.

What would be the fee?

You can't prevent a team from interviewing if its a promotion from assistant coach to head coach. But if a team just wants to interview for a lateral move, they're allowed to block. Position coach to coordinator is considered a lateral move even though most people consider coordinator to be above position coach.

I've long been under the impression that coordinators are a step above the position coaches. Writers, executives, players and coaches have long made it appear that way. I've frequently seen phrases like "QB coach moving up to Offensive Coordinator" used in articles.

Yeah I thought so too, but I remember the Skins wanting to interview a position coach on another team to be a coordinator one year(can't remember who or when)and they were denied because it was considered a lateral move.

I used to also be under the assumption that the assistant head coach was the #2 guy in charge. Apparently, the position is typically underneath the offensive and defensive coordinators.
