Similar to the way the NBA does it, do you think the NFL should make rules about protecting draft picks?

I don't think it would work well, unless it was only like top 3 protection. Draft pick values are largely built in to trades, and if a draft pick might not be conveyed for more than a year or two, teams would probably not make many trades because in the NFL, teams can make turnarounds fast and don't generally have really long rebuilds. Unless you're the Jags, Browns, Raiders or Bucs.

If you don't want to risk losing a top 5-10 pick, then don't make a trade.
Teams make trades for future picks assuming the picks will be within a certain range.

Up to top 8 protected seems fair. After 5 years it becomes unprotected. A trade like the Redskins-Rams would look less lopsided if this were to happen.

The reason it exists in the NBA imo, is because the NBA only has two rounds. The NFL has 7 rounds so there's plenty of value to trade so they don't need to be able to protect picks. Where as in the NBA you really only have that first round pick to trade and you're at high risk without pick protection if you trade that pick. Where in the NFL you could trade a 3rd or 4th round pick vs the NBA say protecting a 1st round pick top 15.
