RealGM Draftkings League - $3 entry fee - one more needed

Post#1 » by YogurtProducer » Tue Aug 30, 2016 6:46 pm

Hey guys,

I thought you guys might want to enter this skills competition. On the Toronto forum we were discussing making a league on DraftKings to play together throughout the NBA Season. After talking with a couple other mods on the site we decided to make it a RealGM wide thing for all sports and what not. With the NFL season just around the corner we thought it would be great to post it over here on The NFL Board and get some active members in the league.

For those of you who are not sure how this works, you just join the league at the link below (sign up if you need to) and join contests made by other people in the league. You are all free to make contests, set contest sizes, cost, etc. and the only people that can compete are other members of the league. There are leader boards to track progress plus you can also take home some cash.

For anyone without an account I highly suggest signing up. Contests can be for as little as a 25 cents and can actually be free as well for just bragging rights. It makes those bottom feeder games that much more interesting when you get a random player on your weekly squad.

So feel free to ask any questions here or by dropping me a PM, but I hope to see all of you join!

I highly recommend the draftkings app on your phones so you are notified whenever a contest is created!
What an absolute failure and disaster this franchise is, ran by one of the most incompetent front offices in the league.

Great idea! I have a DraftKings account and will definitely play. I did last year. Usually only like the $3 contests or something that paid out smaller pots, like maybe $500, but I read a fascinating article in ESPN magazine about the DraftKings/FanDuel creation/competition/pure hatred/advanced players with large software programs slaying the competition and winning an extremely large percentage of games, particularly against newer players.
The winner of that binge was "maxdalury," who is really Saahil Sud, a late-20s former data scientist who lives a few blocks from DraftKings' Boston headquarters. A 2011 graduate of Amherst College with degrees in math and economics, Sud is a daily fantasy pro notorious for entering hundreds of different lineups in every big-money contest -- and some modest-sized ones. For the deep-pocketed player, this strategy is expensive, of course, and so is the exposure. But your chances of winning improve exponentially with 900 lineups in a field of 35,000 when most players have one or two. Sud was also a prolific user of computerized scripts. In one NBA DraftKings contest in which he entered 400 lineups, Sud's last-minute, scripted swap of veteran Magic big man Channing Frye for late-scratched center Nikola Vucevic helped him win an estimated $500,000.

"It's only a skill game if you have the biggest bankroll and the best technology," says John Sullivan, 50, a former FanDuel consultant who quit playing high stakes after becoming disenchanted with the lopsided ecosystem. "That's the dirty little secret."

One of the more extreme examples of this phenomenon happened in DraftKings' $1 Million Mega Payoff Pitch contest on May 26, 2015. Sud posted 888 baseball lineups at $27 per lineup. He destroyed the field, scooping up the first-place prize of $100,000. His lineups finished in five of the top 10 spots. Twenty-nine of his lineups placed in the top 100, and 454 of his 888 lineups made money. With a $23,976 investment, Sud won more than $221,000.

That couldn't happen in our league as those people couldn't join, unless they came here and saw this, so it might be good to make sure we know people who join from being people who have been around for a while and didn't sign up on RealGM after this competition started.

Their investors and people they pitch to want them to merge because they spend SO much money advertising to try and outdo each other and they lose money, but if they merged, they'd only have to advertise for one.

They also have huge legal problems so people in some states can't play, so some posters who wish they could play probably won't be able to anyway.

But it should be fun. Probably need to start with small league in week one to make sure it fills up and then create a second if it does, and then the following week after seeing total number of players can make bigger one, and I'm sure more people will sign up as it goes on.

It's not allowed in WA state.

Also, I'll probably throw the link on my Sig eventually and anyone else is free to do so as well.

About the Sharks joining our league, I have no concerns about that. They have no reason to join our league as we won't have any massive payouts worth their time. You can only join each contest in our league once anyways

Not if I'm making bank. Are those the ads? Odd that a Toronto mod locked his thread on the Raptors board then saying we can't advertise gambling.

No, because people will probably see it here anyway. He should post a link in his sig to here but I guess if that thread isn't tolerated perhaps that might not be either.

I usually make some some weeks and lose some..I only do like $3 contests with maybe a $10,000 prize though, so there are fewer people against me. The huge million dollar ones are too big and cost too much.

But they pay out about the top third to some extent, so I will win maybe like $5 or $10 if I finish like top 25% and they are paying top 33%.

THIS league though is only RealGM people so there will be a winner amongst us every week.

Sorry guys haven't checked this thread as I honestly thought it was dead after mine got locked. I honestly don't understand why it got locked either as I don't really consider dropping $3 a week "gambling" more so just some fun with a little prize. Really no different than fantasy leagues IMO but that's beyond the point.

More than 5 percent of players make bank long term. Sure "Sharks" who prey on little guys like us do exist but you can avoid them through small contests, closed leagues, and single entry contests. The reason some guys do so well is they can join big contests and unlimited amount of times and therefore have a much better shot at guessing the best lineups. But as long as you are smart and play 50/50s and some GPPs you should be close to breaking even consistently and not losing ridiculous coin. If you're lucky/good enough you'll eventually get some luck and win a couple hundred bucks. In over a year of DK I have deposited a grand total of 50 bucks I think and I have managed to pocket about 500 (which was pretty much thanks to a 500 dollar win one night I admit). I actually originally deposited only 5 dollars and managed to work my way up to like 565 which was cool, but probably not the norm.

It's not something I take overly serious; it's just fun IMO to have 3 bucks or so on a nights worth of games because if it goes bad; it's 3 bucks; but if it goes good it could be thousands (or in the case of NFL week 1 -- millions). I validate 3 bucks a night on the fact that what's the difference if I spend 20 bucks a week enjoying DK or I spend the same amount on an underwhelming movie night? The only reason you should join and play DK is if it's fun to you. Do not join with any intention of making bank in the end it is still "gambling". Odds are, you won't win money but at the same time you won't be losing hundreds unless you're stupid.

That being said, this league would only consist of RealGM members. So if 10 people join a contest at 3 bucks each, there is something like 24 dollars worth of prizes after DK takes their cut. We can set it so 1st wins 24 or you can have it be top 2,3,4,5 win and it all varies. The realgm league will be very minimal entry fees, very small contest sizes, which in turn means small prizes. But it could be fun to have some bragging rights. Hell, if you guys want you can make free contests with nothing but bragging rights on the board which is just as fun IMO when you're doing it with a small group.

We have 25 members in the league yet only 4 have joined the contest. I don't really understand that logic, make an account and join but don't play? Seems like a waste of time.

Hopefully this doesn't die as it could be fun but it's kind of looking bleak at the moment. Please do give it a shot as I think it's fun and with some commitment it could be great.

I think it's fine. Maybe it's something about Canada. No matter what you want to call this contest it will be fun and people will have fun doing it. If it looked like that wasn't the case and the company was robbing participants, that is different too. This is without a doubt a questionable company and I'm glad it's biz practices are being questioned, but in a closed contest, unless someone keeps inexplicably winning that none of us know, it will be fun.
