OT: Ideas for a sports podcast

Post#1 » by bleu » Sun Sep 11, 2016 1:42 am

Sorry to draw the attention away from football on NFL Sunday Eve, but I need some help and I'm hoping all of you, my General NFL Board friends, can help me out a little bit.

So I'm going to be starting up a sports podcast with a couple of friends, recording our first episode next week. I've listened to a lot of podcasts, and I feel like one of the most important things is to have good segments that repeat every week, but we're having a hard time coming up with creative segments that people will enjoy listening to. You guys have any ideas or suggestions? What makes a good podcast?

The podcast is going to be primarily based towards local listeners, covering about 30% USU athletics, 30% Utah Jazz and other stories and teams of local importance, and 40% national sports and stories.

I'm actually going to be launching a podcast as well in the coming months. Not sports related, however.

Do you have a Facebook or Twitter account set up to support the podcast? If so then read some of the reactions you get. Don't be afraid to clown on people (as long as it is good-natured ribbing) as that could make people feel like they're part of the crew.

Follow progress by any alumni who are in pro sports, or any local area talent who are playing elsewhere.

Discuss local outdoors events or activities, especially if someone from your crew will be participating. I live in the sub-tropical heat of Houston, but I've been to Utah enough to know that doing things outdoors up there is actually enjoyable (make some t-shirts with your podcast name if possible).

Do an ongoing segment discussing what former Jazz players are up to now (retired players).

I'll add more as I think about them.

You need a twitter account first and foremost. Make a specific one that is the name of the sports podcast. Also, you can tweet out and ask for listener's thoughts on what they'd like to hear.

I'd definitely do a segment on the NFL, a segment on fantasy football, and a segment on college football, all from the national perspective.

I would touch on the Jazz off season review, and go over where you think they can finish in the west, and perhaps touch on all the teams.

You might even throw in a little pop culture, talk a bit about new movies or tv, that has gotten good critical reception or large box office results, etc.

I wouldn't stick on one topic for TOO long on the first one, so you keep the listeners interested even if you are talking about something they don't care about. If it's sports related, chances are they are an NFL fan, so I'd start there given the fact that the season just started.

What makes a good podcast is an interesting/entertaining host. In the end that's what it really comes down to. I wouldn't worry too much about the format and I'd focus on developing your craft of being a podcast host and chemistry with your co-hosts. Make sure you're all on the same page. Like with anything it takes time and practice.

How many minutes would your average podcast run?

To add to this, I'd also listen to as many podcasts as possible. There is a thread on the Suns forum about good podcasts (though probably on 2nd or more likely third page by now). Follow everything Jazz related on twitter. You can also go to bwgood77 on twitter and go through who I follow and add a bunch of those....tons of sports stuff there to get tons of news.

And I'd let this thread fall down the page tomorrow as we need to focus on NFL talk tomorrow here. In fact I may move it to NCAA for now if I can.

i got offered to do something similar because i have good radio voice, probably wouldnt manage the flow very well though. make sure to have controversial, unpopular opinions those attract people.

If you want to develop a big Utah following eventually, maybe touch base on all of the other major programs (BYU, Utah). I can tell you want to specifically talk about Utah state and you definitely can talk about them more then others but I think it would be best to incorporate those two teams in with them.

Good idea, and with Utah, talk about the rest of the PAC 12, and then also talk about the division opponents of Utah St.

Do you listen to Simmons' podcasts? I haven't lately but they still have a huge following, so it might be good to listen to just for ideas. viewtopic.php?p=49182796#p49182796

Thanks for the ideas guys, the feedback helps. I think it's going to turn out pretty well once we get a few trial runs out of the way. We're thinking that the format will generally be the producer posing a question relevant to the weeks events (ex. Can Houston make the CFB playoff?, Is Texas overrated?, etc) then my two co-hosts and I discussing/debating the answer.

A large portion of it will be dedicated to local sports, including the other two major universities in Utah, but we're going to hit on a lot of national sports as well.

We're also going to try to steer clear of just discussing the same things that ESPN does all day, like the Colin Kaepernick situation, or non-stop banter about the Warriors, and dig up some lesser known stories instead.

Not sure if the Utah crowd would appreciate that.

Oops, I forgot. A lot of men out there have about 25 - 35 young wives. I'm sure they don't want to talk about that.

Probably true. I already got in trouble for "pissed" on a live broadcast last week

The people in Utah need to loosen up anyways. An enema is more in line with what they need anyway.

Digging up lesser known stories is right in my wheelhouse. PM me at some point if you'd like to discuss this and I'll go over things that I do on that front.
