Who do you think are the best coaching candidates?

Post#1 » by bwgood77 » Mon Jan 2, 2017 11:54 pm

Obviously I'm curious being a Chargers fan, now that McCoy has been let go. I guess they have asked permission to speak with the Pats D coordinator, Matt Patricia, who I'm not really familiar with.

Jeff Fisher to SD and then back to LA!

If I'm a team looking to hire a new coach, I go big. Reach out to Urban Meyer, Harbaugh, Saban, Petersen. If I can't get those guys', then I go after Sean Payton. None of the coordinators up for HC gigs does it for me. McDaniels was a disaster at Denver. Guy doesn't have the people skills to be a great coach. You have to have a great motivational speaker & someone that can get through to the players along with being able to put together a great game-plan. I don't see that in Patricia, McDaniels, Shanahan, etc. It pays to get the best. At the College or NFL level.

Saban is not an NFL coach. That much is proven. He is mostly successful because he gets the best recruits in the country. I'd be all over Urban Meyer though. Harbaugh obviously a great coach but don't like him so I'd have mixed feelings about him.

I prefer good up n coming nfl assistants unless it is a guy like Meyer. But probably not normally just someone from the Pats just because they are successful. I'd rather take a top assistant from a team who has been doing it for years, and doing it well. Arians was an assistant forever and should have been given a chance much sooner.

Sure, if the right guy is there & available. But, do McDaniels or Patricia strike you as guys who could be great head coaches?

Romeo Crennel, Bill O'Brien haven't exactly lit it up as coaches. What's Charlie Weis up to these days?

That's why I said just hiring someone from the Patriots because they are successful doesn't enthuse me. Another coach having gone through ups and downs for years with a team under a good coach would be my preference, if such an assistant is out there, like with the Bengals, Ravens, or whatever other team. An assistant from a team that is largely reliant on a great qb and who's success depends on that who hasn't proven it year after year isn't my preference.

I think that Patricia is going to be an excellent, very successful head coach one day

It's been years since McDaniels was last a head coach in the NFL. It is possible that he has learned from his previous experience. It is also possible that he has changed as a coach. It's happened before with other guys. Belichick himself is an example of that.

I'm actually surprised that there really hasn't been any mention of college coaches interviewing for any of the openings yet.

San Diego’s front office is set to interview New England Patriots defensive coordinator Matt Patricia on Saturday, according to the NFL Network, and then will presumably travel to Kansas City to conduct an interview with Chiefs special-teams coordinator Dave Toub on Sunday.

According to ESPN’s Adam Schefter, the Chargers also are expected to interview Tampa Bay defensive coordinator Mike Smith, who interviewed for the Jacksonville Jaguars' head coach job on Wednesday in Miami.

San Diego also plans to set up an interview with Carolina Panthers defensive coordinator Sean McDermott and has requested to interview Miami Dolphins defensive coordinator Vance Joseph and Detroit Lions defensive coordinator Teryl Austin.

BUF - Anthony Lynn
DEN - Kyle Shanahan (or Vance Joseph)
JAX - Doug Marrone
LA - I honestly don't know
SD - Mike Smith
SF - Josh McDaniels

It's going to take an exceptional college coach I suspect. Other than Saban (who I still think in the back of his mind is still convinced he could succeed with the right job and right situation) I'm not sure who could make that leap.

I'm surprised Urban Meyer hasn't been talked about more. Harbaugh has proven he can coach at both levels. I don't see him leaving Michigan now but in a few years he'll go back to the NFL.

Smith is said to be the front runner for the Jaguars job now.

With the Charger franchise in such a mess front office wise, organizationally, etc., I don't expect any top notch coach going there. Long road ahead there.

Well, so much for Smith being the front runner. It looks like Jacksonville is going with Marrone now.
