Which of these young QBs would you rather have?

Post#1 » by shawn_hemp » Wed Jun 14, 2017 3:55 am

Just curious how everyone feels about these guys. Definitely seem to be the future of the QB position as the old guard goes through another season.

I'm not even sure if I'd take Wentz tbh. I'd probably go with Marcus Mariota if my team had enough talent to surround him with.

I think the other 3 could do better with bad teams but I think Mariota is the most gifted of these guys. Whether he can stay healthy and / or consisten enough to prove it is another question.

I think you're right about Mariota... particularly his health. That is a big X factor with me. But he has that really good O-Line and Murray. He should get better this season.

This is the year we learn a lot about Winston. He's got more weapons now along with Evans. Let's see if he takes that "next step".

I still think Wentz is going to be damn good. Does he have the supporting cast? (you know how I feel about that crappy Agholor)

Of course I'm picking Dak. To sit here last season and watch him week in and week out... I'm convinced he will just get better. He definitely has the weapons on offense. And the Packers playoff game should have quieted anyone's concerns of how he could lead this team.

mariota all day, not even slightly biased :D

Mariota just makes too many high level throws to ignore

see my favorite example here

I'm sticking with Prescott. He is only going to get better.

I voted Mariota, but no Derek Carr option?

I thought about putting him in but kept it to QBs from their first 2 seasons

A full season right from the start with Dez. Barring injury of course, I fully expect a huge year from both. Look out and get your pop corn ready !!!!

I'm a little surprised to see Mariota with the most votes. I guess I need to start watching him play more, I'd by lying if I said I've watched him more than a couple of times. I've seen a lot of Winston (being in the NFC South) though and I really like his game. I think the next couple seasons are going to go very well for him.

Edge to Mariotta. I worry about his durability however. He would be the clear choice otherwise.

If his receivers step up I think he could be on the verge of a terrific season. He has a damn good offensive line along with my second favorite RB going right now...

He's got the weapons. If he can cut down on the turnovers I tend to agree - the NFC South will be a bear of a division.

Not quite ready to fly that flag BJJ...

But we won't be looking for a QB for awhile.

Definitely not Dak. That supporting cast was the best in the NFL.

Mariota for me is a little too statuesque in the pocket, especially for a guy that can run so well.

For me it was between Wentz and Winston. I'll go with Wentz because I love his game and his intangibles...there's just something about that kid

this is something I wrote about Carson Wentz earlier this year

Im starting to wonder if people were watching the same Eagle's games as I was this year.

Carson Wentz has a great arm. He is a tough player. He is capable of understanding defenses and how to put his team in the best position to win. He definitely is the type of player who leaves everything out on the field, which is great.

But...BUT... the one thing I've noticed about this guy.

He's got pretty slow footwork. And I get it, he's a big guy, but still... And not just footwork in the pocket, im talking he just always seems like he is moving in slow motion. Everyone talks about how mobile he is and stuff, I really dont see it. He can take advantage of gaping holes in defenses to pick up yards because he's still an NFL athlete, but that doesnt make him mobile

Time and time again, Id see Wentz drop back, nobody gets open, he's checking down to his last options and realizes the play is going nowhere, he realizes the pocket is starting to collapse and he needs to get out of there, and then this is the part that drives me crazy.

It's like he just starts moving in slow motion. Even if he does get out of the pocket its like he's running so damn slow. And I really hope its because he is still trying to make a pass play out of it but I dont know, I think thats just how fast he runs.

He isn't terribly slow when he can run in a straight line (4.77 40 yd dash), but he is not quick at all.

Ok, no problem because he's just SO BIG that defenders will have a hard time bringing him down right? Like Big Ben you know?

Except they don't have problems bringing him down. He goes down pretty easily for someone his size tbh.

Now this wouldnt be as noticeable if we had any kind of respectable players catching passes this year but its just something I personally noticed and happen to put a lot of stock into.

The QB's ability to avoid pressure (whether its from a quick throw or just good blocking) is the most important part of any football game IMO.

And Carson doesnt exactly get 5/5 stars from me in that category

Joe Flacco is somebody who I think he should strive to emulate. The receiving core does him no favors so I try to not be too hard on him but at the same time, what do the receivers have to do with his footwork?

Lol. I know he has a ways in the development dept, etc., and hasn't won anything yet. What I see on comparison to Roger Staubach and like Brady today, is I see Dak always playing with a chip on his shoulder. Those guys that always play with a chip on their shoulder's seem to do very well for the most part. Its one of those intangible things I noticed about him very early last year. I think we used to call it true grit back then.

I don't want to saddle him with the "Roger" thing yet...

But - there were moments last season that I said to myself "here's where legends are made". He didn't let me down.
