Jonathan Martin (best remembered as the guy being bullied by Richie Incognito) is now in police custody. Here's the picture:

Martin, who has said he was subjected to bullying both in high school and by teammates in the NFL, posted an image of a shotgun and shells on his protected, private Instagram account, according to the New York Post.

The post included the words, “When you’re a bully victim & a coward, your options are suicide, or revenge.” It had the hashtags #MiamiDolphins and #HarvardWestlake. Harvard-Westlake High School in California is the school Martin attended, and the school announced today that it was closing for the day.

“Last evening, we learned of an Internet post that mentions Harvard-Westlake by name,” the school said in a statement. “Out of an abundance of caution, and because the safety of our students, faculty, and staff is our top priority, we made the decision to close school today. We are working closely with law enforcement and will share more information when we are able.”

Martin’s post was tagged to mention Mike Pouncey and Richie Incognito, two Dolphins teammates who were accused of bullying him when they all played together. Martin also tagged two people who attended Harvard-Westlake at the same time he did.

This dude... always seemed a little off and I'm sure the bullying scandal didnt help, nor did the bullying itself. But that picture is creepy AF and this kid needs a head evaluation.

This is bizarre. A part of me wants to believe that his ig was just hacked. It's stupid enough to make a post of that nature but to also tag people in it...something doesn't add up.

Would have to be someone with intimate knowledge of the guy, because he listed 2 people from his high school.

Plus his IG is private, always was. Someone hacking it would probably switch it to public so the world could see

Exactly. The time for this to be a sympathetic situation is gone.. he's a danger and needs to be treated like one going forward. Im sorry if bullying pushed him to this, but with the amount of mass shootings in this country, we should not be taking chances.

Hmmm, that's a good point. I just don't see the purpose behind all this unless he's having a complete mental breakdown.

The town in this CNN piece is 25 miles west of here - population 363. I have been in that school at least 10 times over the last 12 years attending basketball tournaments and following my grandsons around. It is typical of the small towns around here. The sign in front of the school is the same sign (with a different mascot) in front of the school my grandsons attended and sadly is the norm up here in small towns like Callisburg. And - I know a couple of the "trained" teachers - all certified by county law enforcement. They will not hesitate to protect the kids.

I'm not convinced that arming teachers in large schools is a good idea. Way too many variables to deal with in those tinderboxes. But I am pretty damn certain if someone walked into these little schools with intent to do harm, they would not walk out.

This is our normal right now. And screw Jonathan Martin. Lock his ass up.

It appears that Martin is doing a terrible job of making the point that bullying/abuse is (often) a causal factor and this has been ignored while everyone is crowing about guns and mental illness. Their actions have consequences and yet they continue to avoid culpability while getting to play the victim.

They wouldn't be walking out anyways given that the overwhelming majority plan to die during the shooting.

When Americans talk about arming teachers, staffing veterans, etc. it means they've given up. They're scared. They're weak. They don't care enough to seriously evaluate why this happens and what they can do about it. They're not strong enough to make any sacrifices. It's more important to look tougher and stronger while clinging to violence and force as their only means of solving problems (Gee, who does that sound like...)

It looks to be him pointing to those who bullied him in the past (I presume that was the point of tagging former high school classmates) and saying "Bullying can have terrible consequences. Stop being ********!".

Since he went to Stanford and his parents are academics, I'm throwing the last one out. Above, I theorized if he had a screw loose, why it could have came loose recently

Frankly I think the autism aspect has legs. Socially awkward kid from high school to adulthood, and likely undiagnosed because he was a football player and you dont suspect a ton of football players to be autistic because of the high level of communication needed to succeed.

To answer this question independently, I 100% honestly dont know. He's definitely got clinical depression, by his own admission. So he could very well be.

The whole "Awkard === Autism" thing needs to stop. Aside from how lazy it is, it seems to escape entire groups of people whom it would fit...like bullies. Lacking empathy, oblivious to the consequences of their social interactions, prone to violent outbursts, etc.

You know what else would be great to stop? People assuming. Like you, assuming I'm lazily throwing autism out there, as if I wasn't very very aware of Jonathan Martin's history, not just here, not just in Bullygate, but the extensive mental history he willingly put out there in interviews when he joined the 49ers.

But since you were busy on the high horse, I'll run down exactly why I think he has it:

- struggles with understanding other people (social outcast, doesnt understand how others can banter but he cant)
- gets upset with minor changes in routine (eats once a day when not in training, this blow-up after football)
- very few interests (read his big interview after the bullying thing, "football is my entire life")
- failure to establish friendships (few sympathized with him after Bullygate, which was weird, you'd think some would have his back)
- social awkwardness

Yeah, he checks a TON of those boxes off. Awkwardness is mostly a byproduct of everything else, and people's reactions to it, so yes that would be a tell-tale symptom, but doesnt mean its guaranteed. But because there are so many other factors pointing against him, I think its entirely viable.

I'll thank you to not use me to grandstand. If you want to have a conversation, I'm obviously game. But if you have to use someone's condensed version as a jumping off point to put yourself on a pedestal, be prepared for silence in return

I'm getting that he was terribly bullied almost all his life and never developed social skills due to being and feeling alienated. You can say his size should immediately make him tough, but he apparently he grew up in a sissified environment. A 4'10" guy can be the toughest man in any room if he was raised to be as such.

Everyone should be glad he expressed his inner feelings on social media before he harmed himself and others. He needs mental treatment, not to be labeled a p-word. People calling him that name are the reason he's so far off the edge. It's painful that people don't realize that in 2018. Socially awkward people aren't born to become potential school shooters, they are pushed and pushed to the brink while not having a safe space to take their minds off people that torment them.

Hashtagging your previous high school, a couple of former classmates, as well as former teammates who he claimed bullied him? Yea that's a little more attention seeking than exchanging texts/DM's with friends. Then you have how much of the purpose of social media is attention seeking/personal gratification...

Perhaps lazy wasn't quite the correct word? What should I label the action of playing armchair psychologist resulting in listing broadly applicable symptoms (socially awkward!!!) to speculate about any possible mental/social "quirks" (trying to be PC here)?

While I understand that your approach fits in with the current (flawed, IMO) DSM approach to mental illness, I find it deeply misguided to start speculating about specific diagnoses without personal interaction. Furthermore your specific examples are clearly incorrect. Changing your diet for athletic reasons is not even remotely autistic. "Social awkwardness" is incredibly vague and can range from people with anxiety to introverts. I mean, according to that list you would say I'm autistic.

I apologize for coming off harsh. I'm not a big fan of the current evaluation/treatment of mental illness and I especially dislike how these diagnoses seem to apply to some groups and not others.
