5 weeks into OTAs, Mayfield not ready to compete with T.Taylor
Interesting that he's "not close" to competing for the starting job. Is Tyrod Taylor amazing and we just didn't know it, or is it more troubling that the #1 pick isn't close to being ready as the Browns starter?
I think there's obviously some time needed before any conclusion is made, but hasn't Mayfield been billed as the Fifth-year senior QB with the "It Factor" as an experienced winner? Darnold, Allen, and Jackson were the upside guys, and you're hearing nothing but positive comments about their progression. Rosen was the "ready to go" QB and the reports from his team are that he's impressive.
Is it a little bit concerning that Mayfield is not getting many positive reports about him so far, with all of that in context?
I'm personally biased, as I thought he was probably the fifth or sixth best QB, and was stunned when he went #1, particularly to the Browns who have been so poor in assessing QB talent in the past and had a whole new regime to identify the franchise guy this draft with picks #1 and #4.
We'll see how it goes as he's just getting started, but when you don't get much praise in the lovefest that is OTAs from anyone that watched you, that's certainly not a good thing.

A kid who is only a few months removed from college isn't ready to take the reins from an experienced vet? Shocking....

But in all seriousness I don't think there were many people who thought Mayfield would beat out Tyrod this early or even in the first season or two...atleast I didn't. He's in a good situation. Give him some time to blossom and learn the everyday nuances of being a professional qb.

Tyrod Taylor is pretty underrated. Analytics have been giving him props. He dealt with a really bad group of receivers last year too. No surprise he's off to a hot start with the tools Cleveland has.

Browns fans should not be worried. It's going to take some time. Also, in my opinion, Baker Mayfield should sit the whole year, then next year, hand him the reins if Tyrod is not cutting the mustard.

Tyrod Taylor is a nice enough stop gap QB, but if a QB is drafted number 1 overall, then you should be expecting him to step in and take a significant number of your team's snaps his very first season. If you make a list of QBs in the league right now that are worth a crap, almost every one of them took significant snaps. Two that didn't sat behind Favre and Brees and Brees himself probably should have been starting over Flutie. If he can't take the job from a decent journeyman, then he wasn't worth the number one overall selection, which, most of us not in the Browns front office probably already knew.

Couldn't agree more.

taylor is pretty solid, and i've always been of the opinion that teams should sit rookies to start their careers - give them time to adjust and learn what they are doing before you throw them to the wolves

Re: 5 weeks into OTAs, Mayfield not ready to compete with T.Taylor
Baker Mayfield will get some playing time if:
1. The Browns are blowing out an appoint and he is in for mop up duty.
2. Towards the end of the regular season if they are eliminated from playoff contention.
3. If Tyrod has a serious injury, that causes him to miss games.

Brady sat. Rodgers sat. Brees sat. Maybe it's a coincidence, but you have to wonder if teams are doing things wrong when the 3 best QBs in the NFL sat their rookie year. You could also throw in Garappolo, Rivers and Cousins.

Rodgers was the one sitting behind Favre and Rivers the one behind Brees. Garappolo was a third rounder sitting behind Brady. Brady a sixth rounder sitting behind Bledsoe and Cousins a 4th? rounder sitting behind a rookie of the year who some thought should have been taken ahead of Andrew Luck. If a team is drafting number one overall, they most likely blow and the only way that happens is to not have a QB that is good enough to hold off the number one overall selection in the draft. I should have qualified "any QB in the NFL worth a crap that was taken in the first round" though. I think that would have clarified what I was trying to say about Mayfield and his situation with the Browns.
