Sports Misery Index: How miserable is each NFL fan base?

Post#1 » by Cactus Jack » Mon Dec 31, 2018 5:54 am

http://www.espn.com/nfl/story/_/id/24402996/ranking-most-miserable-fan-bases-nfl

Ranked 1-32 by Most Miserable (According to ESPN).

1. Cleveland Browns
2. Buffalo Bills
3. Chicago Bears
4. New York Jets
5. Detroit Lions
6. Tampa Bay Buccaneers
7. Miami Dolphins
8. Washington Redskins
9. Oakland Raiders
10. Los Angeles Chargers
11. Cincinnati Bengals
12. Jacksonville Jaguars
13. Dallas Cowboys
14. Tennessee Titans
15. Arizona Cardinals
16. Kansas City Chiefs
17. San Francisco 49ers
18. Houston Texans
19. Minnesota Vikings
20. Atlanta Falcons
21. New York Giants
22. Los Angeles Rams
23. New Orleans Saints
24. Carolina Panthers
25. Baltimore Ravens
26. Indianapolis Colts
27. Denver Broncos
28. Green Bay Packers
29. Philadelphia Eagles
30. Seattle Seahawks
31. Pittsburgh Steelers
32. New England Patriots

The Index takes into account five factors: championships, playoff berths, playoff wins, heartbreaks and rival comparison, with recent events weighted more than events that took place decades ago. We identify how each NFL team rates in each category -- the higher the ranking, the more the misery. This is updated through the 2017 season.

What do you think of this list? How accurate is it?

Don’t get how Miami is more miserable than teams like Cinci , Vikings and Titans .

Miami has multiple Super Bowls and a perfect season. like how are they more miserable than Minnesota ? 0-4 in Super Bowls + countless other chokes

vikings don't seem high enough

formula must put more emphasis on not making it to the playoffs and lack of playoff wins than it does the heartbreaks category

and i'm sure the lions and bears being that high didn't help the rival comparison at all

They are using recency as a determination - Miami has been mediocre for like 20 years. I think they're properly rated here.

LA hasnt had a pro team in years. Now that theyre back, no one really gives a sh&#. Now theres 2 teams, and it hasnt hit the city, especially puzzling the chargers, who just moved up the street from san diego. Many still believe theyre the san diego chargers.

They are having big disagreements over stadium revenue too. The Chargers are not selling many seat licenses (these sound like a rip off).

If the Vikings fanbase is rightfully 16th, fans of teams 1-10 have been slitting wrists for years. Fans of a team like Detroit are also due.

Being a Chargers fan has been painful, but hard to argue more painful than some of those near the top. Obviously the Bills and Vikings are tough...and Browns.

But the Chargers have never won a SB...luckily got there once but never should have and got blown out...which I knew was going to happen.

But the worst thing is, even when they have great teams, they have the worst luck.

Against the Jets in the playoffs in 2005, in OT (or maybe right before OT, Nate Kaeding, always a great kicker, misses and Jets win).....then against Patriots the next year I believe, they had the #1 seed and home field....most dominate team during the season.

They missed a FG in that one down the stretch in a close one. But the worst part was they intercepted Brady with the lead, and that would have sealed it, but instead of going down, the guy tried to return it and fumbled it back to the Pats, who drives for the win.

Then against the Jets a couple years later, Kaeding misses 3 field goals and they lose by 3. Kaeding was great before playoffs but couldn't kick in them.

Then the last few years, they have had dumb miscues, TONS of injuries, etc....3 tds called back this year already on suspect calls...this past week they were missing Derwin James (one of best players), Adrian Phillips (James' replacement), starting LT and best OT Russell Okung, Melvin Gordon has been out the whole year, Justin Jackson, backup to Ekeler was out.....starting TE Hunter Henry got injured in preseason and will miss most if not all they year...he is really good too and already missed a year, AND his backup Virgil Green was out. Mike Williams AND Travis Benjamin, two starting WRs were out. Melvin Ingram, their defensive stud got injured and also their best LB Perryman got injured and was already injured earlier in the year.

And they have had awful kickers and odd injuries to kickers the last few years.

Rivers was missing like 6 of his top options and still passed for over 300 yards.
