This came out of left field. What happened to all the confidence he had in Taysom Hill?

Actually there was speculation that Jerry might try to poach Payton and replace McCarthy, even though McCarthy's contract runs to 2025.

Payton had 1 year remaining on his contract but maybe Saints weren't willing to give him a big enough raise or more years?

But if he quits with 1 year remaining, he still can't sign with another team?

I propose making this thread about all 2022 offseason coaching moves, maybe rename it to something like 2022 Offseason Coaching Carousel?

His plan should be to take a year off & then take over for Carroll. That way he gets his Brees replacement in Wilson.

Sean Payton will take a year off before finally getting to coach in Dallas. He still has a home in Dallas, his kids live in Dallas. Just makes perfect sense that’s where he’ll end up.

covid happened (didnt he get it twice?), I think he's burned out. If Im Jerry Jones, I call him up and offer 100M to coach and run the Boys, even if wants to start in 23. The Boys can then use this year as a gap year to get the salary cap in order and restock their impending FA losses

Payton is 58 and probably has more money than he'll need.

Any more money he makes is mostly to leave a bigger pile to his kids and grandkids.

But if he wants another shot at the SB, he can't take too much time off, waiting for the right opportunity.

I think Cowher was much younger when he stepped away and went into TV but he was linked for years with NFL jobs. It's been about 20 years now so Cowher is mostly a TV personality at this point.

If he wants to make one final run, he would probably want to choose a team which is no more than a year or two from contending.

Cowboys would make a lot of sense since they have a QB in place.

OTOH, he's won a lot but has he developed a QB? He signed Brees as a FA and then gave a big contract to Hill, who clearly isn't a franchise QB.

At this stage I don’t think they do it for the money I think they do it just as competitors . I see him back in a year , I think taking a year off to recharge will do him good. But he should consider handing off some more responsibilities to his assistant coaches at his next stop . Dallas makes a lot of sense in 23.

I think he’s heading to Dallas and they are just discussing compensation for his services. Apparently they had a deal done in 2019 to allow Payton to leave NO for Dallas but oddly enough the Antonio Davis (NBA Pelicans) trade put the kibosh on the Payton deal.

Please be true...

If McCarthy has one more year though what happens if he actually has playoff success?

If this is Jerry's plan I'd much rather him pull the trigger NOW.

You might get your wish. Apparently they had a deal worked out in 2019 to acquire Sean Payton from the Saints. They had already agreed on compensation and everything but at the last minute the Saints GM killed the deal. Their GM is also the GM for the Pelicans in the NBA and Anthony Davis forced a trade and the Saints GM didn’t want to known as the guy that lost AD and Sean Payton.

So it’s likely the Saints and Jerry are just working out compensation again. I’m sure Jerry wants some assurances too that they will actually allow Payton to leave for Dallas.

Here is a tweet to the story.

Oh I see that Payton has already stated that he will not be coaching next year and plans on taking a year off.

Welp, I'm sure McCarthy can see what's coming lol.

He better win a ring next year.

That might be the only thing that saves him (winning a ring) however I’m not sure that will even save him.

Would Dallas still owe the Saints some kind of compensation?

Because even if his contract would have run out, after a retirement, if they come back the old team retains rights? At least that's the way it is with players isn't it?

Yes there would have to be some kind of compensation for the Saints. The question is how much. The Cowboys have shown a willingness to trade a 1st round pick. Most recently they traded a 1st for Amari Cooper. Based on that story they had agreed to compensation in 2019 but no telling what it would be today.

Gruden trade cost 2 first round 2 second round picks. It’s not that far of

Notice that Payton criticized the Cowboys actions on that last drive?

Like sliding too much, never handing the ball to the center, etc.

If he's going to be in the media next year, more chances to stick the knife into McCarthy.

I have no doubt the Saints would get that but they’re not getting Parsons. Jerry is not in the habit of just giving away rookie superstar players.
