ESPN's Fascination with the NFL

I'm an NFL fan just like the rest of you, but my goodness, do they really need NFL Live on every day right now? Sportscenter spends a good 40% of the time on football (the San Francisco 49ers are on the clock!!!), and now they've been having these 4-hour long draft specials. I'm all fine with this when the NFL season is underway, but seriously now, spend some time on sports that are happening right now.

And don't use the Draft as an excuse, this has been all year since the season ended, and will continue in the summer.

it will slow down in the summer, thats when baseball tonight takes over. basketball will continue to be somewhat of an afterthought always will be unless people just feel the need to give it there biggest ratings since MJ.

and the drafts very important, hell its proabably one of there higher rated programs of the year so im sure they want people to be informed. and why does it matter? they show this stuff at like 1-3 pm when hardly anyones watching and about 2 segments in sportcenter.

that's because hockey playoffs and baseball suck. i would rather watch a 4 hour special on the nfl draft then watch a baseball game. baseball is national pastime my balls. the game is super boring to watch.

I saw that. They have NFL Live and then an ESPN Sportscenter Special for like an hour and a half, and then again later in the night. You have to wonder if guys like Todd McShay and Mel Kiper get tired of saying the same things over and over again.

Cut it down, because they've got some 10+ hours if not more just on the draft itself.

Yes the more the better.

Would you rather watch baseball?

Honestly? Yeah, because all this show does is go in circles. They repeat the same information over and over again. They bring in Mel Kiper, he goes over the numbers, that's awesome...but this is something I can read online.

I dont mind the coverage, but it's a bit much to do a 3 hour show in the afternoon and then do a 2 hour show later at night essentially repeating the same information that was said earlier in the day. It's a waste of time.

Man... you guys are complaining about 4 hours of Coverage on Football?...
I think you would much rather have that, than a 4 hour coverage of what Marty Turco ate for breakfast, and how the each individual Leafs' golf swing is coming along in the offseason...

I wish Canada had even a fraction of that much coverage of Football here....
Ah well... Thank God for NFL Network...

It's because the NFL is BY FAR the most popular sport in America. I remember one week this season, they said on Sportscenter that EVERY SINGLE NFL game was sold out, that's saying something. Remember that NFL stadiums hold 2 and 3 times more people than baseball/basketball stadiums do..

I'd rather watch the same thing over and over, baseball is crap.

The NFL Draft is one of the biggest and best moments of the American Sporting year. I want to watch all I can before, during, and after. Yes, they repeat the same things sometimes, but if you don't like it, you can always watch ESPN2, ESPN News, etc or if you don't have those, I'm sure there is some sporting game on tv.

If not for NFL Live, ESPN would just be dumping old sports specials and/or annoying talking head programming on the afternoon schedule. After the Draft, i'd imagine it'll go back to just the one half-hour of Live a day, which is far from dominating the schedule. In the meantime, the Draft is a major event, so it doesn't hurt to give it heavy attention.

The NFL is what really built sportscenter and is still the most popular league in the country, they are doing what they must to maximize revenue, also most people do not watch sportscenter 24 7 so it is a different audience and still gets solid ratings.

Do you guys think that another reason why ESPN is covering the NFL so much is to get as much as they can out of the investment they made? ESPN pays the NFL $1.1 billion per year for Monday Night Football, while NBC paid half of that and have flex scheduling.

If you love baseball so much, you are free to go to those forums at anytime :D

If ESPN were NFL all day, it would only be a better place.

The NFL is popular but remember its a 16 week season. Its tough to judge how much more popular a sport it is when there such a short amount of games in comparison to basketball and baseball.

Espn will alienate itself from other sports because of its relationship with the NFL one day. You think its over because of the draft. Wait till minicamp starts sportcenter over a full day of NBA playoffs and MLB baseball. Other Networks are going to say hey be the top dog on this network or be a step child on Espn.

I'm an nfl fan just as much as the next guy but I enjoy baseball a whole lot more... but the thing for me is just that why would I want to wacth the nfl draft all day when I could be doing or watching other things and then find out who got picked and by what team by spending 10 minutes on espn.com later that night... and you already got all of the other junk that they say in between picks if you had been watching sportscenter for the last month.

I don't have a problem with nfl coverage at other times during their offseason but around draft time, its a little bit ridiculous.

Obviously not, you can't like baseball more, and be just as big of an NFL fan as the next guy.

i like the nfl live show. but the whole ESPN presentation leading up to the draft is waaay overblown.
