Found this article about the St. Lucie Mets in my local newspaper.

"Catcher Drew Butera, who played at the University of Central Florida last season, will be in charge of guiding the pitching staff. The staff also features prospect Jonathon Niese, a 20-year-old left-handed pitcher. Eric Brown is the team's third starter."

Maybe I'll go to one of the games.

Sand Gnats Young and Talented

The Savannah Sand Gnats have a new set of players, a new major league affiliate and will play at a newly renovated Grayson stadium.

Tuesday, the New York Mets officially announced the Sand Gnats official 25-man opening day roster.

Manager Tim Teufel will have a young team featuring five players under the age of 20 and eight players under the age of 21.

Teufel says despite the team's age, he still believes they can be contenders.

"We got a very, very young team," said Teufel. "With young teams are going through a process of learning. we have i think three 18-year-olds and they just turned 18, so they would be seniors in high school, and they're playing pro ball on a full season club so we got our work cut out for us."

Headlining the list of prospects on the roster is 17-year-old Francisco Pena, who will be one of the youngest players in the South Atlantic League this season.

Pena is ranked as the 12th best prospect in the Mets organization by Baseball America, he is the son of former major league All-Star and current Yankees first base coach Tony Pena.

Four more Sand Gnats are ranked by Baseball America as among the top 30 in the organization.

They are right-handed pitchers Josh Stinson (#17) and Tobi Stoner (#22), left-handed pitcher Todd Privett (#24) and outfielder Dan Stegall (#29).

The rest of the pitching staff includes right-handers Matt Durkin, Emary Frederick, David Koons, Jeremy Mizell, Greg Mullens, Nelson Portillo, Jorge Reyes and Tim Stronach.

Julio Polanco joins Privett as the only other lefty on the staff.

In addition to Pena behind the plate, the Gnats will have catcher Sean McCraw.

The infield will consist of Juan Lagares, Hector Pellot, Luis Rivera, Josh Thole, Gregory Veloz, Leivi Ventura and D.J. Wabick.

In the outfield Elvis Cruz, Brahiam Maldonado and Jonathan Sanchez will join Stegall.

The Gnats will open the season at home on Thursday, April 5 with a 7:05 p.m. game against the Asheville Tourists.

I don't know if this has ever been addressed here, and frankly I may be insulting many of you by posting this as if you didn't know if (which is not my intent..) but in case anyone didn't know, about the hands-down, official, Samson-says Worst Trade Ever, the real reason we got rid of Kazmir was that our pitching coach, Peterson, is considered by the Wilpon's to be the most valuable asset in the Mets organization, and he reported that he believes there is something about Kazmir's pitching style that will ensure he ruins his arm/shoulder/whatever fairly young....I'm not saying any of this is actually true, but some major journalist had a high placed source back in the day and it was reported that Peterson dissected Kazmir's mechanics and told the Mets brass that, at the time, Kazmir was valuable but he'd eventually throw his arm out permanently, it was inevitable... Now even if it was true, we should have done better than the wrong Zambrano, but it might not have been ALL of the GM's fault if he was going on bad or yet-to-be-determined information...

I went to the AAA Charlotte Knights game last night. They played the Columbus Clippers which is now the farm club of the Washington Nats. The game sucked and I was cold. :-?
