Its kind of odd to be inspired by the death of a coaching legend like Bill Walsh, but this got me thinking.

If I had to construct a monument for four legendary coaches, here's who I'd put up there:

-Vince Lombardi (60's)
-Chuck Noll (70's)
-Bill Walsh (80's)
-Bill Parcells (90's)


Each of these coaches were the class of their respected era, and each had their share of proteges that went on to become high profile coaches as well (with more emphasis on Walsh and Parcells).

Bill Belichick could be the 5th man when his career ends, but he has competition like Bill Cowher, Mike Holmgren and Andy Reid.


So....who would you etch in stone as the greatest coaches of all-time?

id just go by who i thought the 4 greatest minds were, parcells on that would be a joke.

honorable mention goes to Bill Bellichick and Don Shula. if jimmy johnson coached longer maybe he couldve made it.

Yeah, I'd have to say that this is a good list. I would put John Madden into the honorable mention category as well.

No love for George Halas or Paul Brown? (Yes, I know he took credit for Bill Walsh's work, and often worked to halt Bill Walsh's progress, but he had other innovative and instrumental additions to the game)

Joe Gibbs anyone? Three SuperBowls and one of the most winningest coaches in the playoffs. Won the three SuperBowls with the three different QB's. Never had a back to back losing season. Hes the reason the counter plays, multiple TE formations and pulling lineman are so common in the game today.

The Big 4 (in keeping with Mt Rushmore theme):

George Halas
Chuck Knoll
Vince Lombardi
Don Shula - I cannot believe no one mentioned the Don on the list of all-time greats.

On the reverse side of the mountain, I put:

Tom Landry
Joe Gibbs
Bill Walsh
(and start sculpting a place for Bill Belicheck)

Hard to narrow it down to four, but I'll go with

-Vince Lombardi
-Don Shula
-Chuck Noll
-Bill Parcells

As much as I'd like to put Joe Gibbs in there, it's hard to find a spot.

Any list not including Paul Brown and/or Halas is faulty. Really, now.

Also: Parcells is an overrated bloatbag of a coach. He shouldn't even be HoF-worthy, let alone considered one of the best ever.
