Why Did These QBs Never Get Opportunities?

Billy Volek and Kelly Holcomb have both been pretty decent starters when they have gotten starts. In Volek's case, I believe at one point, he was considered the best backup QB in the NFL. Why were these two guys unable to land attempts to get a starting gig anywhere?

You kind of answered it yourself.

Jim Sorgi is the best backup QB out there.

that guy has the easiest job in the world, him or favre's backup, you get paid for pretty much playing in the preseason or when your teams already clinched a spot and you get mopup time.

I liked Volek when he was the Titans' Backup QB. He filled in very nicely when McNair was injured or needed to be rested, and he connected well with, IIRC, Drew Bennett.
However, In 2005 McNair was gone, In 2006, Vince arrived, and seeing as how there was no long-term future for him with the Titans, he forced himself out to San Diego, where he thought he had a chance to be the starter for the Chargers. Unfortunately, Rivers played very well, and at the time Volek was 29.
He's 31 now, and it's likely that he'll spend the remainder of his NFL days as a back-up Quarterback and a borderline starter on a bad team possibly.

Only 31? Thats like a rookie for a QB in Chiefs world. Maybe he'll get a shot there someday.

Please stop with the jokes. He would not start for a top 10 NCAA team.

Volek was demoted to 3rd string upon his arrival in SD... in TEN he was battling someone for the starting job in front of Young... I believe it was some nobody, until the Titans got sick and tired of Volek's shtick and signed Collins and immediately made him a starter...
Fisher was quoted as saying Volek's attitude and work ethic were questionable, he was demoted to 3rd string for TEN and traded to SD, where (surprise!) he was demoted and left at 3rd string the entire season. As a guess, I think he felt he was owed the starting opppurtunity over Young/Collins as a means to showcase himself, which never happened. Volek deserved what he got.
Holcomb has been beaten out on numerous occasions for a starting position. Very poor arm strength, decent accuracy, Bledsoe-like mobility...

It was Kerry Collins.
His work ethic wasn't bad, but his attitude soured as Steve McNair left, and Vince Young was drafted.
But who could blame him... he'd been playing pretty good behind Steve, he took a chance and signed with the Titans, thinking there was some future in a starting role for him, and we end up drafting Vince Young.
And then the whole signing Kerry Collins pissed him off irrevocably.
I don't blame him. Floyd Reese/Jeff Fisher did him wrong there, not even giving him a shot at showcasing himself for the starting QB spot.

Volek always struck me as a right-place/right-time guy in TEN. His let-it-fly style was a pleasant divergence for the Titans receivers of that time, and opponents weren't used to having to cover them so long so far down the field. They were schooled on McNair always checking down quickly and avoiding the high-risk/high-reward throws that Volek excels at, and for a few weeks it worked beautifully. IDK about his SD tenure but I know Marty refuses to tolerate inaccountability, and I heard that rap on Volek coming out of college.
I know Kelly Holcomb some. A very good friend of mine was his college center and I know several other guys from that MTSU era, and Kelly thru them. I do have a bias for him, but I would humbly suggest that if he had better accuracy on his deep ball and more pocket escapability he'd be a very good NFL starter. But he doesn't, and his arm isn't anything to rave about. After his Cleveland ordeal he came to terms with the fact he's a good backup QB and nothing more, because he saw how a QB controversy kills a team. He picked up real quckly that JP Losman was legit and the future of the Bills moreso than he was, and he rolled with it. I haven't talked to him since last season, but I bet he's thrilled to not be the #3 in Philly but rather the #2a in Minnesota, a place where he can help mentor a young QB who needs loads of help.

Wasn't there a 3rd guy, before Collins though? I remember Collins was signed like in Week 4 of the preseason or something like that, because Volek couldnt keep the job and VY was better... was it Shane Mathews? I could have swore there was another QB, who was cut when Collins was signed..

IIRC, It was Volek and Young into the third week of preseason, with Matt Mauck about to be cut. We entered theseason with Young, Volek and Collins, and then after Volek was traded, we signed Mauck to the practice squad.
Volek had the lead position as the Starting QB, then Fisher/Reese signed Collins to compete against him.

A lot of people thought that Matt Schaub was the best back up QB (obviously up until this year)
