Could the Pats go 19-0 and get the first pick in the draft?

It's possible.
If the Niners lose the rest of their games, and Miami wins 2-3 games, the Niners would be awarded the #1 pick in the NFL draft....
That would immediately be sent to the Pats.
Since the Niners traded their 1st round pick for Joe Stanley (28th pick in last year's draft).
If that happens...
Should everyone in the 49ers' organization be fired? Or was it just bad luck because of injuries and one of the worst offenses in the history of the NFL?
Who would the Pats pick?

But yes if they happened to have the first pick that they trade down and maybe pick up Kenny Philips or draft a LB?

the pats would trade down and pick up a #1 next year, and this process will continue as long as bellichick and pioli is there they'll keep trying to stock up on future picks and/or 2nd and 3rd rounders for when they really want to move up and take a guy

I dont think theyd draft Dorsey, they already have Wilfork there.
They need a young LB as there current LBs are all grandpas.
James Laurinatis.
Come to think about...the pats could possibly look at a QB late 1st - 2nd round.
They need a guy that can keep their team above water when Brady goes down.
They need a guy to step in when he goes to see his first kid born. (can ya blame him...his wife is a sight to see)
And what better guy to learn from and stay under his wing than Tom Brady.
Any QB should want to get drafted there.

laurinitis or young, depending on how they feel about there RB situation and mcfadden
or trade down, sitll maybe get mike jenkins or another secondary player and get another first next year and more picks

I don't think there's anything wrong with their RB situation. They've got 3 separate guys with at least 40 carries that are averaging 4.5+ yards/carry.
Its just that Brady isn't allowing them to flourish.

Laurinitis? Has NE ever drafted a LB on day 1? They seem to do pretty well picking their LBs out of FA. Glenn Dorsey would be the pick, methinks.

I really hope they go OT this draft. Both Light and Kaczur have been disappointing to varying degrees this season. I like both Long and Cherilus equally but I agree with Icness: I think Cherilus is a better fit at LT. Plus one could feasibly trade down and pick up some later/future picks and Cherilus will still be on the board in the 10-15 range.
Although the prospect of McFadden in a Patriots uniform is quite tantalizing.

I know Belichick loves to pick guys in the trenches, but I can't see them spending that much money on a defensive tackle when they play (mostly) a 3-4 and already have 4 starting caliber defensive linemen in Seymour, Wilfork, Warren and Green. All of them are very young and Wilfork is the only one not locked up long-term but I'll guarantee they will get a deal done with him before free agency, too. As talented as Dorsey is, it becomes a waste at some point to lock up so much money and assets into a position were you are already loaded and when you won't even be able to start an All-Pro caliber talent.
I'd say Jake Long is a possibility if they don't trade out of the top 5 (currently #2 based on strength of schedule, I believe), but that kid from OSU Ghoulston (sp?) dominated him. I don't watch a ton of college football, but he didn't seem like a guaranteed, franchise stud tackle...but then again, it's a 1 game sample size.
I say **** the trenches; they are boring. The Patriots already dominate the line of scrimmage on both sides of the ball anyways and will be great regardless of who they take-- so go with the entertainment. Take Darren McFadden and make this offense even more explosive and fun to watch.

And with the 1st pick in the 2008 NFL Entry Draft the New England Patriots select Owen Schmitt Fullback The University of West Virginia.
If that went down, I'm not sure if Mel Kiper would lambast the Patriots.

The only thing that concerns me with keeping the pick is that the Patriots will be dangerously near the cap limit next season and, given the relative age of their LBs and potential loss of Samuel, the Patriots will probably find better value trading down.
I also disagree with kSkD: successful franchises build their trenches up from drafting linemen on both sides of the ball, not from dipping in the FA market where they tend to be overpriced and past-their-prime. Boring as it may be, it
