Suspended NFL star Michael Vick sentenced to 23 months in prison

Michael Vick was sentenced to 23 months in prison Monday for his role in a dogfighting conspiracy that involved gambling and killing pit bulls.

The suspended Atlanta Falcons quarterback could have been sentenced up to five years by U.S. District Judge Henry E. Hudson. Vick, who turned himself in Nov. 19 in anticipation of his sentence, was wearing a black-and-white striped prison suit.

After Vick apologized to the court and his family, Hudson told him: "You need to apologize to the millions of young people who looked up to you."

"Yes, sir," Vick answered.

Vick acknowledged he used "poor judgment" and added, "I'm willing to deal with the consequences and accept responsibility for my actions."

Good! Maybe he might actually learn something.

Looks like he wont be returning to the NFL after this sentence. I mean don't you serve almost all of that and then serve some of it in a half way house?

It depends if the league will take some action after his sentence, or if they will feel that his prison sentence will be enough of a punishment for him.

In the end i don't think he'll end up serving the full sentence and will probably be released under some conditions much earlier.

According to the wonks on CNN, as part of the plea agreement he is not eligible for early release other than up to 45 days for good behavior, which is why he started serving the sentence already.

He's not eligible to get out until the last week of August 2009, which means he's going to miss the next two seasons for sure. The NFL has not ruled on whether the suspension will be served concurrently or not, plus he also tested positive for marijuana in Sept. and the NFL has yet to factor that into his suspension length.

Hopefully future facilitators of dog fighting will receive similar sentences, not just those with millions of dollars.

He didn't hurt a single person. What he did was despicable, but I think the sentence fits the crime. 2 years is a long time in prison.

It really is, considering that most athletes don't get anything remotely close to such length. Hell, most of 'em get away with everything.

I would personally send him to a mental place obviously this man needs help. Never met a person who attentionally hurt animals for pleasure who wasn't at least a little **** up in the head.

What stands out is how the judge talked about how Vick not only participated, but basically funded the entire operation and was pretty hands-on in running it. Anytime you're the ringleader of a violent illegal activity you're going to get max prison time.

I'm genuinely shocked at how many people think he shouldn't be in jail at all. He was the money and impetus behind an illegal, illicit gambling ring that was the cause of death for animals--the mafia are often guilty of much less and serve much more time.

Race card. For some reason, the race card always comes up.

And then there's the whole issue of culture. What the hell. I don't get this argument. He was brought up in the United States. It wasn't like he was brought up in Uganda or anything. And if anything, his PR Reps or his Managers or his Agents should have informed him that such a thing is illegal, if he didn't know.

The sentence fits the crime? Despicable, this crime had the max potential for 15-20 years. He gets...barely 2

WHAT THE HELL? The judge is hyped up to be some macho man, Vick is basically the ring leader behind it all. And, he only gets 2 years, out of a major crime? FTL

Two years is plenty. If he wasn't Michael Vick people would be fine with that. Most celebs get away with a slap on the wrist. People who actually endanger human lives.
