so right now i can throw around 30~35 yards. i'm sort of skinny so i think that's a good distance for my weight and strength. what area of my upper body should i work on to increase my throw power? bicep? tricep? pect?

Work on your mechanics more than working out a specific muscle group. More fluid mechanics equals less muscle strain, which means less effort used to throw the ball. I gained a good 10-15 yards on my throws just by learning to throw properly.

don't overlook your lower body either.. strong legs can help more than you may think
basically, work on all areas (including mechanics)

For football, work on the core muscle groups like legs and chest. Don't concern yourself too much with biceps/triceps, but don't ignore them either.
As for increasing throwing power/distance, it's really all about mechanics and knowing how to properly throw the ball; it's learning how to use your arm as a whip and not push the ball. You should also be focusing on strengthening your abs as those muscles are used when throwing.

I can't speak from personal experience, but my brother throws religiously. Every day for years he's gone to the gym to toss. He's thrown the ball 80+ yards during games before so I can only assume it's worked.

You're Russel's brother?
Sweet. Does he like Lane?

C'mon, 80+ yards? In the air?

Yup. He's got the biggest arm I've ever seen, pros or college. Two years ago over winter break I went into an empty gym to work out with him. He picked up some footballs and started throwing the full length of the gym against a wall. I got down the length of the gym and said I'd catch for him. He told me to move; I'd break my hands. That was about 50 yards long, and the throws he made never went higher than about 7 feet off the ground.
This past season in one of his late games in November, he was rolling out to his right with the DE on his heels. When he threw the ball he was standing on his own 18 yard line. He launched it, against the wind, and it landed just inside the 12 yard line. So do the math.
The whole crowd just let out an 'whoa...' once it was in the air. One of the most unreal things I'd seen on a field.
I'm working on a DVD of his highlights. I'm sure it'll be on there. Once it's done I'll export some of the clips to Youtube. One is of a throw he made for some scouts this last summer.
You know how Kyle Boller's thing was to throw the ball from the oppositions 40 yard line and have it go through the goal post? Then Russell did it before the draft from the 50? My brother did it from his own 45 yard line.

that is true. i trying to find the best mechanics right now. i sort of using the tom brady style.... i release the ball above my head/up high and i *push the ball down. i will probably youtube it and show it to you guys. correct my mechanics please! that's the mechanics i'm using right now. side arms actually hurts a lot if you throw a lot.. good thing i don't have the bad habit of throwing side arms but a lot of my friends do.
i'm not a gym rat and i'm skinny so i'm trying to buff up a little bit. my lower body strength is decent but my upper body needs some work. i'm sort of a runner type guys. i want to play receivers but none of my friends really know how to throw so i'm throwing the ball most of the time... my shoulder area starts to sore after around 40 throws... (i would think that's a decent amount of throws..)

Heard that the back muscles really help with this. Like the ones targeted in pull ups and lat pull downs.

Throw a lot. The starting QB on my team is about 5 3, and 130 but he can throw I would say a good 35-40+ yards with loads of accuracy. I love catching his passes because of how he throws them.
OR, you could just start moving your bench/power clean up. The third string QB on my team throws a good 60 yards and almost broke my finger once on a hitch. He's not starting yet because he's only a soph and isn't accurate enough.
Why are you trying to look to increase your throwing range? If you're trying to become a QB, I say you give the Bears a call...

I just came to the clip I was thinking of. It wasn't exactly how I remember it, though it was close. The ball was released on the 9, landed just past the 24 yard line. So about 66 yards, on the run and into the wind. Not bad.
Some of these other tosses are ridiculous. 25 and 30 yard outs. Deep posts on a line. I'll have this thing on youtube tomorrow.

He plays for Minnesota State, a D-II school. He threw for over 4000 yards this season.

Can't you also use that rubber tubing thing to resist the throwing motion?

Ironically, I asked the exact same question a few weeks ago, so here are the answers I got:
