Roy Williams suspended one game

The Cowboys will be without safety Roy Williams against Carolina. Williams was suspended without pay for one game Monday by the NFL after his third illegal "horse collar" tackle of the season.

Williams, whose use of the tactic led to the league passing a rule making it a 15-yard penalty, did it against Eagles quarterback Donovan McNabb in Sunday's 10-6 loss. He will miss Saturday night's game, which will cost him $37,187 -- one game's salary.

Grabbing the inside collar of the back of the shoulder pads or jersey, or the inside collar of the side of the shoulder pads or jersey, and immediately pulling down a runner brings a 15-yard personal foul

This particular foul though seemed like bull at the time, and still did after replay. He pulled him down from the back but his hand was right below the nameplate of the jersey, meaning his hand couldnt have been INSIDE. Unless im misunderstanding the rule here i dont see how it can be a horsecollar.

It looked like a clear as day horse collar to me.

Also, Ken Hamlin should be fined for his disgusting hit on Matt Schobel. I have no idea how that wasn't even called a penalty.

Two extremely dirty plays right there.

I'm a little surprised at the suspension, but I guess he had it coming.

Dude. Just saw it for the first time on a replay during MNF. If that's not a horse collar tackle I don't know what is.

The league needs to be more consistent on these Horse Collar calls.

I don't think Shaun Phillips was even fined, nonetheless suspended, for a very clear horse-collar tackle on Chris Brown's TD run, a week ago.

Yeb. Seriously, Roy. You should know better, especially with a QB.

Yea by the way he falls of course its gonna look like that. If you pull a guy down by the upper back or near the neck it looks the same. The key here is the rule says you have to be inside the shoulder pads/jersey for it to be a horsecollar, but Roy's hand was clearly below the nameplate on Donna's jersey which makes it not a horse collar. I dont see much of a difference between the effects obviously, but going strictly by what the rules say (and thats the NFL does when they make calls like that) he shouldnt be punished for it.

Dirty play and not the first time he's done it (when they were discussing adding the rule it was called "the Roy Williams rule")

I'm a little surprised he got suspended but he needs to get it in his head that it's a dirty play

go to about 24 seconds you get the best view i think anyways.

you can clearly see it is above the name plate of mcnabb .

The picture you posted is just at a very bad angle.

It ends up below the nameplate but it starts at the base of his helmet.

When they originally made the rule your hand had to be inside the shoulder pads but last year they made it so you can't even bring the guy down by grabbing the back of the jersey around the collar.

The rule was expanded to include the back of the jersey collar in 2006.

Bob Fergusson just went down with an obvious horse collar. Not called.

Well now that i see that replay, yea it clearly is. I was going off of not seeing slowed down replays from the back angle.

Though I gotta say, it sucks our pass coverage will really be hurt by his loss next week.

The do need to call the foul more consistently, but the suspension is deserved. He's the reason they made the rule yet he continues to do it. That's his third one this year. You can easily end someone's season (career) doing that.

Tyrone Calico echoes your statements.

Too bad the rule wasn't in effect when he got Horse Collar'd by Roy Williams.

yeah. that was pretty blatant. any homer would have to agree it was a horse collar. you could debate if it was suspension worthy.

it prolly was only suspension worthy cos it was on the qb.

its really b/c he was warned that the next time it happened would be a suspension and obviously he's going on instinct and just trying to take a guy down.

dumbass play but obviously you're focused on the play at the time and maybe a couple plays later he figured well im probably out next week.

it doesnt really bother me but pat watkins is out for this game which could mean keith davis at safety and more nate jones. but at least its against a rookie qb
