With a game crucial to their playoff hopes coming up Sunday night against the Minnesota Vikings, the Washington Redskins have offered a two-year contract extension to head coach Joe Gibbs, according to a source.

Owner Daniel Snyder has said he's confident he can convince the Hall of Fame coach, who is in his second stint with the Redskins, to stay in Washington.

In his 16th season coaching in the NFL, Gibbs' Redskins are 7-7 this year. Washington's playoff hopes are still alive as the Redskins stand two games behind the New York Giants and one game back of the Vikings with two games left in the season.

Gibbs' legacy in Washington was cemented during his first stay with the Redskins from 1981 to 1992. He led Washington to three NFL titles in four Super Bowl appearances. During that tenure he had a 124-60 record during the regular season and amassed a 16-5 postseason mark for a .762 winning percentage.

Gibbs returned to Washington for the 2004 season and has gone 28-34 since ending his NFL retirement.

but he does deserve some credit for keeping the team competitive without an offensive line, secondary and linebacker core the entire year.

As a 'Skins fan, he's made some really dumb decisions this year, play-calling wise that's cost us maybe 4 games.

I'll give him the benefit of the doubt. If we win out, we'll be in the playoffs for the 2nd time in 4 seasons. I would have preferred that he runs through his current contract to see where this team is headed.

Over the last month so, ever since the Taylor tragedy, he's been a rock for the team. The players have said it themselves.

Anyone think this might be a golden parachute?

Rafael is right--Gibbs has been at his best uniting this team after an unthinkable tragedy, and that deserves respect and some benefit of the doubt. Not enough for me to offer him that extension, but Dan Snyder makes more in an hour than I do in a year so he's free to spend however he wants. And he does.
