Is Karlos Dansby a top 5 LB? Not even close but the point of the Franchise Tag is to retain players when the team and the player cant come to a contract so the player is forced to stay. If the Cardinals do franchise Dansby they are given more time to find a replacement, negociate a new contract or field trade offers. A Cardinals defense with Dansby is already bad so if they lose their best LB it would probaly get much worse. Almost never is the Franchise Tag actually used on a top 5 player at his position

Hey, the Seahawks franchised their kicker a couple of years ago. The Bears franchised Lance Briggs, an inferior player to a healthy Dansby.
The Lions franchised Jeff "On His" Backus, then Cory Redding. I'd take Dansby over either of those two.

Try not to take the Franchise tag as a sign of greatness but view it for how the team sees it (most teams anyways)--a way to lock up an important guy for another year without giving him a riskier long-term deal with greater cap implications, in case the guy was just playing for a contract or gets hurt or winds up sucking.

It's not like they had a choice, they wanted to keep him and this is the best way to do it. Hell, I remember the Pats kept franchising Vinatieri.

Thats because he was their second best offensive player.

Don't know what's so funny about this. But I hope the Cardinals let Dansby hit the open market because he'd fit a huge need for my team.

So where are all those people who thought the Cardinals were a playoff team this year? Hello? Bueller?

That's right. All of you are in hiding because, for the umpteenth year in a row they missed the playoffs. Next year, again, is going to be "their year" and all the analysts will sing the praises of their "dynamic" offense and "up-and-coming" defense.

I don't see what the hell is so special about anyone on that team not named Anquan Boldin or Larry Fitzgerald. The fact that the Cardinals are franchising Dansby suggests that, if they lose him, they won't be able to replace him with a LB who's worth a damn. Which they probably won't because they literally can't. This team has blown draft after draft and no free agent in their right mind signs with them.

The Cardinals are a joke of a franchise and should be treated as nothing less or nothing more.

I don't think things are that gloomy and doomy with this franchise. Their offensive line improved, but still has a ways to go. Their first move should be to figure out the QB position. Either Leinart's the guy or he's not...you can't have Warner as a starter anymore because he's too old and is too inconsistent these days.

The defense continues to make strides. Adrian Wilson is a playmaker in the secondary and Antrell Rolle has shown flashes of why they drafted him so high. I like Karlos Dansby at LB, and I think Darnell Dockett is becoming one of the better DT's in the NFL. They still need to draft some pieces, but I think there is a lot of upside on this roster, and they play in a division where anything is up for grabs.

Honestly if you're subjected to watching Cards games, like I am since I live in AZ, you'd know they weren't that far off from the playoffs. They should have beaten SF twice and they did have some good wins this year, and other games that were competitive. I think next year, if they get the QB situation solved, they will pull it all together.

I know about Adrian Wilson. He's the safety that can't play in coverage.

And Dansby's the good, but not otherworldly, LB who puts up numbers on a bad team.

The Seahawks should have beaten the 49ers twice as well. So why are they the division champs and the Cardinals an also-ran?

Dansby is great.... Icness earns his analyst logo

I'd take him over Briggs... he's a ballhawk and a monster of a linebacker... very strong and quick... played with one of the more pathetic defenses in the league.

Wilson is overrated... great tackler, bad coverage... that Cards secondary is way too mistake prone. Outside of Dockett... Cards line looks pretty poor too. You can make a case for Pace being good, but he seemed to have no interest in guarding space in a zone...

Put Dansby with a couple other good all-around linebackers and you'll have a stellar core... Well done on Zona's part to keep him.

I live right next to the stadium, I have lived alittle over half my life, unlucky enough to have to watch this joke of a franchise every year.

My take, and believe me...The Cards are no different than any other year. We will hear the dark horse calls, all off-season. Only to watch them go 7-9 or 8-8. Good enough to get somewhere in the 8-13 draft range like they do every year. Watch that guy suck while he is here, only to become a productive player somewhere else. The Cards suck, please do not play them up like they are going to or close to accomplishing anything. They are the NFL version of the Clippers.
