Patriots still need to win the super bowl, but once they do, everyone will have to admit they are either #1 or #2 regardless how bias you are.

Well the Pats have to win the Super Bowl for it to matter. If they do then yes I think they are the best team ever.

Wait... where are the '98 Broncos?
But in all seriousness the pats if they win it all are the best team ever.

As said before, if the Pats win it all, no matter how close the games could be, they are the best team in NFL history.
BTW, that list should also include the '98 Broncos, the '75 Steelers and the '86 Giants.

Best "I" ve ever seen is the pats assuming they win the SB. but i ve heard 70s steelers teams were pretty nasty.

the 9th vote goes to the Dolphins of 72. Can't believe it took until the 9th vote for them to receive some cred. here. Perfect season and the ring.

That Dolphins team wouldn't even be in my top 5.

The 91 Skins SuperBowl team was a lot better than most of those teams.
The 83 Skins probably would have gone down as the greatest team ever had the players not gotten wasted the night before.

I assume this really means "in the Super Bowl era" and not "ever."

i don't think any of the packer teams have a chance against any of the teams listed above.

Since you mentioned that this is only valid if the Patriots keep on what they've been doing, I voted Patriots.
Not considering the current Patriots, I'd vote '85 Bears. But if the Patriots keep up what they've doing I can't see there being much of a debate between the two. The Bears strength was based on getting to the quarterback before he could make a play, and it failed against a quick decision maker in Marino. I don't have much doubt that Brady with Moss and Welker could survive that rush.

The '29 and '62 packers, '41 Bears, '27 Giants, '49 Eagles, and the '22+'23 Canton Bulldogs belong in the discussion if it is greatest "ever." That's if you go by relative to the teams they played.
If it's the greatest in absolute terms, I don't think anyone before the early '90s Cowboys could play with today's top teams with their modern weight training and "supplements."

The Steelers of the 70s are alleged to have been more 'roided out than any team since, so I don't know if the "modern" era starts as late as you think it does. Other than that though, it's a pretty valid point.

If the Pats don't win the superbowl, the 85 Bears.

There are a lot of great teams that were left off that list. Regardless, I think the Patriots will finish right up there if they win the Superbowl but some of those teams... wow. I don't think attempting to rank them is all that productive.
BTW, I voted for the Bears.

I'd love to see the 85 Bears play this year's Patriots. What a game that would be.

I'm sure there was massive drug use before the early '90s, but the size differential is still there, although it's hard to find exact numbers on (and iirc, the Pittsburgh '70s teams were big for their time).
The all-decade '70s offensive line averaged 262 lbs, the '80s all-decade line averaged 270 lbs. Anthony Munoz was as good as any linemen ever, but he would be too small to play today. Now even centers are considered small if they are under 300 lbs. The Cowboys '93 line averaged 313 pounds.

The 1991 Redskins team should be in the discussion as one of the greatest teams ever to win the SB.
