Is Derek Anderson the next Drew Brees?

The situation going on in Cleveland reminds me a lot of the situation that happened in San Diego a few years ago. I feel like Anderson/Quinn is Brees/Rivers all over again. Should Cleveland let Anderson walk and put trust in Quinn? I've always been a firm believer in trusting a guy that has proven he can work in your system. Especially a QB. It's so far to find a good one. Anderson has proven he was a top 10 QB in the league this year (to a very big surprise because he certainly came out of nowhere.) Cleveland would be dumb not to extend him, and if needed deal Quinn and sign a more experienced backup like Culpepper or McCown.

Isn't it obvious?

They're not gonna give up Quinn, they gave up their first pick last year to snatch him.

Quite possibly.

What I'll say though is that I don't think politics will play the part in Cleveland they did in San Diego. In San Diego, Brees was already established as a pretty good quarterback before struggling when the whole team went to hell. Management then panicked and drafted Rivers, then traded Brees away in a bid to have Rivers prove them right.

With Anderson, nobody could be blamed for not expecting him to do this, and hence whether they end up with Anderson or Quinn, either will be able to know as "their guy" for management.

I think Phil Savage (Browns GM) realizes that a great deal of Anderson's success belongs to the guys in front of him and K2 and Braylon Edwards. I could see people making a chicken/egg argument there, but that ignores the prospect that Quinn could have had the same success if given the same opportunity. The Browns would not have spent so much to get and sign Quinn if they didn't think he could do it. Think about this: Anderson wasn't impressive enough over the summer to beat Charlie Frye, and had Quinn not held out he almost certainly would have been the starter by Week 6 no matter the Browns record.

Anderson has impressed me quite a bit, but he has proven to be kinda streaky, and he makes his receivers work hard to make some catches, moreso than a lot of guys. He throws as good a 15-to-25 yard pass as any QB in the league. I also think his quick and consistent release is underrated, and he's not the statue he's made out to be by a lot of ignorami.

But I'd still hitch my wagon to Brady Quinn and take the 1st and 3rd rounder some team will give me for Anderson. I know most of y'all don't think he's worth that, but I could tell you 5 teams that wouldn't blink to make that offer for him.

^Does it have to be a 1st/3rd from this year's draft or can it be for a future 1st/3rd, as well?

This is why you are one of my favorite posters. Spot on analysis. Throwing DA behind one of the best O-Lines in the league and giving him a top 5 receiver and a top 3 TE to go along with a plus 1000 yard rusher really made his job A LOT easier. BUT there was just something missing with him all season. He makes sloppy throws and is always trying to force passes when easier options are available. His accuracy is somewhat offset by his powerful arm, but it shouldnt be overlooked. I love the guy for getting us 10 wins, but if some team makes him an offer and we get a 1st and a 3rd for him... then thanks for the memories and good luck elsewhere.

Really? I would say its more of a Matt Schaub type situation, but Quinn is no Vick in more ways then one.

I honestly think that Cleveland will use Derek to gain some assets and have Quinn set up to be the new no. 1 for better or worse.

Personnally I hope he ends up a Lion for the following reasons and more I won't bother listing;

1- it seems like a move Millen WOULDN'T make, which makes this reason all the more better.

2- no more 1st pick WRs...come on.

3- I like Kitna as a person, i've bumped into many times in public...i don't like him as a starting QB.

I think the Browns will trade into the first round using Anderson this year. If the Browns could swing a deal with Anderson, this years 2nd rounder and next years 3rd rounder for Miami's top pick like what has been speculated, I think that is a no brainer for cleveland management.

I don't see the Browns trying to move up to the number one especially if it costs us a second and third. Sure we want to be in the first, but the top pick just costs too much.

I think it's a lot like the Brees-Rivers situation in San Diego except Anderson didn't get hurt to close out the season like Brees did with a serious shoulder injury which made the decision all the easier for San Diego. Still, I think Cleveland feels Quinn is the answer at QB longterm, and they'd be wise to ship out Anderson for some draft picks when his value is at an all-time high. There are several teams that could use his services at QB. I think Anderson is one of the better QB's in the league, but I think Quinn has the chance to be one of the premier QB's in a few seasons (of course, I'm a ND Homer though).

I remember reading that Quinn's contract was relatively small and that the Browns could quite conceivably keep both. Any word on whether this is true?

Rivers was making a fortune and I remember that being the main motivator in SD letting Brees walk.

One slightly off topic question for Icness or any Browns fans.

Why did the Browns sign Ken Dorsey to an extension?

Quinn contract is actually quite small although it can be substantive if he makes some incentives. Of course he'd have to play in order to reach them however.

Dorsey was resigned because he is Quinns Yoda. Seriously the sole reason he is even on the team is so that he can help Quinn giving him insight into how to be a pro QB. There is not a single Browns fan that wants to see Dorsey get any closer to the field than he is at present. He is truly horrible.

This obviously begs the question:

If he is truly horrible at being an NFL QB, what is he doing warping young minds?

To most of us this just guarantees that there is no way that the Browns move Quinn. He is absolutely here for the long haul.

Unless They trade Anderson for a 1st rd pick and that 1st rd pick is a stud, trading away anderson instead of quinn is a big mistake. Anderson is gunna be nice years, hopefully he'll fit in whoever's system really well.

I agree that the Browns should trade Anderson while has high value.

Same situation as Brees but it is odd that Brees and Anderson are opposite players. Anderson-tall with a big arm, inaccurate, struggles with short routes while Brees in SD was known for his accuracy, his lack of height and struggles with the deep ball.
