Joe Gibbs resigned as coach and team president of the Washington Redskins on Tuesday, three days after his team's playoff loss concluded a season marked by the killing of safety Sean Taylor.

The Redskins said in a statement that Gibbs will remain part of the Redskins family and serve as a special adviser to owner Dan Snyder. Gibbs was to discuss his decision at a 3 p.m. news conference at Redskins Park.

The Redskins will begin a search for a new coach immediately. Among the certain candidates are two former head coaches on Gibbs' staff, Gregg Williams and Al Saunders.

Gregg Williams is probably the front runner but the Dolphins are also interested in interviewing him.

Too bad people out of Washington won't realize the great job he did in turning this franchise around.

He took over a roster that was studded with crap left behind by Steve Spurrier. He wasn't a great gameday coach anymore but the man even after all these years had an eye for talent and getting the most out of what he has.

I'm a young guy and I never saw the Skins in there glory years. Before Gibbs came, I had only witnessed one post season performance by my Skins.

Hes taken us to the playoffs 2 of the last 3 years. Hes left us with a solid roster that will contend for the playoffs.

Thankks a lot JG.

I'm sad to see Gibbs resign, but not surprised given the way that Dan Snyder is. I'm sure that if Snyder had fired him, the backlash from DC fans would be crazy, so he resigned. From what I've heard, they will keep him with the team as a "special advisor", which is good.
