Bengals sign Jordan Palmer to back up brother Carson Palmer

CINCINNATI (AP) -- Jordan Palmer was packed for Phoenix, ready to take his career to the Arena Football League, when he got a most unusual offer.

The Cincinnati Bengals wanted to know if he would like to try to earn a spot as his brother's backup. They didn't have to wait long for an answer.

He signed a two-year deal Wednesday that will give him a chance to play behind his brother, quarterback Carson Palmer. Although brother tandems have been common in the NFL, it's rare that two of them get to throw passes for the same team.

"Someday we'll look back and laugh about it and think it was pretty cool," Jordan said in a phone interview.

This gives the Bengals a 4-deep QB rotation of Carson Palmer, Ryan Fitzpatrick, Jeff Rowe and Jordan Palmer. Even if Jordan gets cut you can't ask for much better in terms of QB depth.

Fitzpatrick is a competent backup (at best) and Rowe is being groomed to be the permanent backup. They may not be Matt Cassel or some other backups but for the Bengals I think they'd be fine.

I know they're pretty happy with Jeff Rowe, but were not real pleased at Fitzpatrick's lack of improvement. Rowe will probably be the #2 and Fitz and Jordan are battling for the #3 spot. And I would be shocked if Jordan Palmer beat out Ryan Fitzpatrick--he makes lead-footed Chad Henne look like Big Ben, plus he lacks the deep ball accuracy.
