Tony Romo

Post#1 » by Scrub Sura » Mon Feb 4, 2008 4:08 am

With Eli excersing his past failures and expectations, would you consider Romo the new(old) Eli Manning?

If not, who?

No, Romo wasn't a high pick and actually put up dominating numbers in the regular season.

Eli Manning is the old Eli Manning. You really think next year he won't still be really bad?

There's no comparison here. Romo's been a consistently impressive quarterback for the whole time he's been starting, only he's had troubles in his first two playoff appearances. Eli's been a mediocre quarterback for the better part of four years, only it seems like he turned it on along with the rest of his team over the last month or so. Maybe he finally did turn a corner, but I wouldn't make any guarantees until he plays well for a full season. Eli deserved a lot of the criticism he got. Romo, not so much.

I thought this was about the next Eli Manning, not about some absurdist book which I didn't order.

Eli Manning isn't a good quarterback. That his team won a Super Bowl doesn't change this. He's not suddenly not crap because the Giants won a Super Bowl.

He's considerably better than in month's/season's past, and to that anyone has to agree.

HE was one of the HUGE reasons his team advanced round to round. Over the past few weeks, he's been able to put the ball RIGHT on target and INTO tight coverage, something good QBs do consistently.

He's definitely made strides from where he was earlier in the season.

Not sure why you aren't giving him leighway of any kind here.... :dontknow: -- He did LEAD his team on a GW drive in the SUPERBOWL against arguably the BEST team in league history.

Its not just the superbowl, its him throwing 6 TDs to just 1 INT in the entire postseason, on the road against "better" teams each time, and the great game he had against the Patriots in the last game of the regular season.

Thats a great stretch of 5 games, including 4 playoff games, against better teams.

It is only 5 games, but its an important 5 games that led to a ring.

This ladies and gentlemen, is called sour grapes. Another fan can't handle the truth that he was wrong about Eli and the Giants.

The Giants beat the Patriots. Bitterness is irrelevant. Don't bring bias into this. Eli Manning just isn't that good. That the Giants won a Super Bowl doesn't change this. Did Trent Dilfer become not sucky when his team won a Super Bowl?

Maybe he did turn a corner and I'm wrong, and I'll admit that, but just watching the game he doesn't look significantly better. He still threw some dumb passes in the game. 3 (2?) on the final drive were tipped by Patriot defenders before they touched Giant receivers, for instance.

A 5 game stretch isn't a lot to go on. Yes, 4 of them were the most important games of the season, but it's still not a whole lot to go on. Let's just wait to see what the future brings for Manning. He didn't suddenly become really good because his team beat the Patriots. If, let's say, Asante Samuel jumped 3 inches higher and intercepted his pass on the final drive what would everyone say? This didn't happen, but my point is that you can't let one game or one drive change your perception of a player. Let's see Manning next year. If he puts up an 85 QB rating, OK, you guys are right.

The Manning-Tyree play is the greatest play I've ever seen, for what it's worth.

Did Trent Dilfer lead his team 83 yards for a game winning touchdown? Trent Dilfer never played as well as Eli has recently.

For what it's worth, Eli started the season great too. He was outstanding in the Dallas game, even throwing a TD after he got a separated shoulder, next week at Green Bay he didn't play very well (not horrible either), after that he was very good during our six game winning streak, then went through a very bad stretch with a couple of good games mixed in. Then of course the last 5 games he was absolutely phenominal. You have to be crazy to think he will suck after this.

oh, what couldve been...

Giants were the better team, plain and simple. I don't care if you think Brady is the best QB ever or if Manning sucks/overrated/"lets see"/"old manning", but the Giants win as a team. End of story. Say what you want about Eli, but when it came to deliver, he delivered.

I said the Giants won as a team. That's my entire point. Read.

Stop bringing my perceived bias for the Patriots into this. It's not relevant.

You also have to be a knee-jerk reactionist if you think he's some sort of reliable, elite talent now.
Eli's been really good the past 5 games but its 5 games. Until he shows as much consistency as even a Tony Romo, then I wouldn't entirely put my faith on him.

Eli after this game is an immortal in NYC. He doesnt ever have to have an MVP year or anything of the sort to be revered ever again. He'll always be remembered as the QB who led back to back 80+ drives in the 4th quarter to defeat the 18-0 NE pats; not his mediocre regular seasons.

Tony on the other hand, is only remembered for his botched field goal hold, carrie underwood, and jessica simpson.

I'll take Eli any, and everyday of the week.

edit:

To sum it up, it doesn't matter if Eli throws 26 INTs next year, no one will say anything about it. He is golden in NY for as long as he is our QB. Giant fans understand it is hard enough to get to the big game, let alone win it. "Dynasties" are few and far in between, especially in modern NFL football. It will take a lot for Eli to ever be doubted in NY again.
