watching some of the tv commentators, they seem to be givin it up to brett due to his retirement today.

but is some of it based on emotion?

this guy is a great QB. no way diminishing his accomplishments. im a fan.

but he MAY NOT be top 5 all time.

there are several QBs to be considered that could push him out of top 5.

montana
marino
brady
bradshaw
aikman
manning
fouts
unitas
staubach

i would say that in durability he is #1.

but you dont hear folks claim cal ripken jr. as the greatest player of all time.

He is not top 5.

Top 10, sure. Not top five.

And durability means much more in football than in baseball, Lake.

It's crowded at the top, but Fouts and Bradshaw have no place in that company. Unitas, on the other hand...

Hard to put a number on anyone. They all played in different times. They all had different styles. Some had better talent around them. Yes Brett is one of the all time greats. But so are all the others being mentioned. And there will be more to come.

I agree with the times are different and it is hard to compare QB's. However, considering that Favre really had limited weapons during his career he has been amazing. Put up some of the best numbers ever by a QB. He never had a Moss, Rice, or top notch/all pro weapons for an extended amount of time. That is one of the reasons I believe he had the year he had. Driver is the leader, Jennings is going to be an all-pro and Jones is up and coming.

Top 5 maybe, top 10 no doubt, if he had more weapons during his career he would have to be considered best of all time. Elway had the weapons late and he went out on top. Farve will be missed...

Its far too subjective of a topic to discuss. Some will bring up stats while others will bring up his contributions to game itself. If only I could go 17 years without missing a day of work.

I agree that it's hard to rank players because of different eras and different styles.

However, there are different categories you use when you discuss this.

1) Super Bowl Championships. Obviously Montana and Bradshaw have 4, Aikman and Brady have 3. Marino always gets downgraded because he has 0, but that isn't exactly fair.
2) Stats. Favre is at the top of every category there is for quarterbacks. Plus, his durability is a major plus.
3) Era. Favre obviously played in a pass-happy era. They changed the rules to favor passing back in 1980 and it's been a passing league ever since.
4) Teammates. Favre never had a HOF offensive teammate. The other quarterbacks mentioned did. Montana had Rice, Brady had Moss, Bradshaw had Harris, Swann and Stallworth, Aikman had Smith and Irvin, Manning had Harrison, Fouts had Joyner and Winslow, Unitas had Berry; the only three that really didn't was Staubach (who had Dorsett late), Marino who had Clayton and Duper together for 10 years and Elway.

So, taking all that into account, Favre is in the top 5, IMO.

1) Montana
2) Elway
3) Unitas
4) Favre
5) Marino

You know, I've seen Farve, but I've never seen Farvre. Good job Lakeshow, you've reached a new level of butchering his name.

I think Brett is one of the greatest qb's and players of all time, top 5, top 10 whatever. He's a legendary player that will never be forgotten.

He's not Top 5, but he is definately in the Top 10, as BBJ said.

I would have to agree. Kelly??? Young had everything in place and had a short career.

i don't think he's top 5, definatley top 10

yeah young almost underacvhieved considering he had 2 0f the top 5 wr's of al time at the same time. if he didn';t have his concussion problem maybe he could have been even better.

at everyone who has Brady in the top 5/10...

Farve is top 5 IMO....only 3 time MVP, holds all the major QB records for career #s, won a Super Bowl, durability...
