CHICAGO (AP) - Pittsburgh Steelers first-round draft pick Rashard Mendenhall was robbed at gunpoint along the Chicago lakefront early Monday, his mother and agent said.

The former Illinois running back was not hurt in the robbery, during which two people stole Mendenhall's wallet and cellular telephone, his mother, Sybil Mendenhall, told the Chicago Tribune.

"He didn't get hit or anything, he didn't get hurt or anything," Sybil Mendenhall said. "He's fine."

It's funny, we almost always blame the player's lifestyle whenever professional athletes are caught up in violence and other stuff. But in a good percentage of cases, the athlete should be the one who receives 100% of the sympathy..but we don't always give it.. it's always their fault.

Are you saying its not Cedric Benson's fault that he operated a boat drunk or its not Chris Henry and Pacman's fault that they cant stay out of trouble?

Rashard is a good person. When he was here, he was never acting all crazy like Dee Brown, so I am sure this was random robbery. I am glad he is okay.

I don't have a list in my head, but i can name a couple of guys who this goes for: Charles Grant (stabbed in the neck in a nightclub), Marvin Harrison (if the recent reports about him not being a suspect are true) and Mendanhall obviously. Everybody assumes that these guys live 'bad lifestyles' and hang around the wrong people and are criminals if they are caught in the middle of an incident at a club. I don't have a stat right in fron of me, but i would guess that the vast majority of NFL players attend nightclubs on occasion, but a low percentage are actually caught up in violence.

And I hate to always use this man as an example, but Sean Taylor is the best example i can think of by far. The man was apparently changing his life around, then he gets shot while sleeping in his own home with his wife and young daughter, and everybody starts blaming it on him and that this had to be someone attempting to kill him because he lived a bad lifestyle and was in trouble with the NFL and law briefly before.

Redskins Tackle Chris Samuels said it best: "How in this great country can a man be asleep in his own bedroom, get shot, and in the media it's like he did something wrong to deserve this?"

Give it a **** rest. The guy died last year, get over it. Sure its horrible how he died and that hes dead. But its not like the guy was a choir boy to begin with.

The NFL was so ridiculously (Please Use More Appropriate Word) with that whole incident. Sure give the option (and heavily influence them) to all the players to wear that sticker when he dies.
But on the other hand they FINED Jake Plummer for wearing one to honor a former NFL teammate who died fighting for this country?

Chris Samuels is (Please Use More Appropriate Word). Of course initially no one was going to give a guy the benefit of the doubt that had previously been arrested so many times. Who had threatened people with guns himself. But yeah its just the media hating athletes.

I hate to get in the way of a good agenda, but anyone who walks in that area of the city at 2 a.m. is up to something or just plain stupid. Pick your poison.

Actually, Plummer was never fined. They decided to let him tape ads to be played at stadiums and he agreed to stop wearing the sticker.

As for being in Chicago at 2 AM, big deal. It said lakefront. Ive been out to Millennium Park and along the lake to midnight with just a friend when I was in highschool. I would really have would like to know which part before you say if he was up to good or bad.

That article said lakefront, other articles said 39th street and lakefront. HUGE difference between freakin' Millennium Park and 39th street.

I'm not saying necessarily he was doing anything illegal, just that if you exercise that little caution, you do deserve some blame if something happens to you.
