Lynch moves on, Steelers P woes and other camp crap

Post#1 » by Icness » Thu Jul 31, 2008 1:27 pm

John Lynch has been given his release, at his request, from the Broncos. Word is he will likely retire. If so, one of the best safeties of the last 20 years deserves credit for knowing when to say when. His role with the team was diminishing.

Steelers P Daniel Sepulveda tore his ACL and is out for the season. It's not a serious problem given their lousy coverage, but it's never a good thing to scramble for a starter this late into the summer at any position.

Watch out for the Terrence Newman groin situation. He's out for the preseason and it's the type of injury that can linger for a long time. Any time a CB loses lateral agility and explosiveness, which is precisely what a groin injury impacts, it's real hard to gauge how well he'll play. If they don't get Pacman cleared, that secondary suddenly goes from a major strength to a huge question.

Anyone who questions Derek Anderson, allow me to assuage your concerns. Every trained eye I've talked to, and that count reaches double digits, tells me he might be the most improved player in Browns camp. He has really worked on his footwork and weight balance upon his release. He's tightened his spiral on deeper throws and has added better touch on throws out of the backfield.

Spy report from Miami: John Beck will be cut by the 2nd preseason game, and Chad Henne is "at least a year" from being ready to start for a team that wants to win more than 4 games. Henne has not impressed at anything but his deep ball, and he and Sam Satele have had major problems with snaps. They are seriously looking at Quincy Carter, which should give you an idea of just how dire things really are. Unconfirmed rumor from this spy: they have approached the Jets about Pennington and there might be some fire to that smoke.

For you fantasy geeks, the first rookie you should take is Kevin Smith. He is turning heads of even the most skeptical observers, and Manny Ramirez has greatly improved at RG and will likely win that job over Peterman. If that happens, all the hubbub about a newfound commitment to the run is legit and Smith will get at least 280 carries and could very well average 4.4 ypc. Oh, and Calvin Johnson is "uncoverable" by anyone, including a man zone, where Brian Kelly played man and the D shaded both a LB and a safety over/under in a zone on him. He's healthy, he's gotten faster, and he's focused. The Lions D, on the other hand...

thanks for the update

wow, i think after the favre situation, the browns might potentially have the next big "qb situation"

It's great to hear that Anderson is going to be a better player, and is the starting QB, but what does this mean for Brady Quinn? I've heard he's been training religiously and working hard 8-10 hours a day preparing to be ready when called on. It seems Anderson might be the Browns guy for the long haul, so I'm just curious how this will turn out...should be very interesting...maybe a trade down the road?

BTW how do you think the Favre situation resolves/ends ( if that ever happens) ?

You never report anything out of Redskins camp

btw if Quinthy Carter comes back, as a starter none the less, I'm going to burst into tears of laughter.

Patience my friend! I haven't talked to my man there yet. I will be on Richmond AM 910 Monday morning talking Skins and I've left emails with a couple of people to get info to talk about. Thus far the only thing I've heard is that the team has fully bought into what Coach Zorn is selling.

I'm scratching my head at Carter too. I appreciate all he's gone thru, but the fact remains he essentially sucks. If Henne or McCown aren't better than him right now, the Dolphins are in worse shape than I think most of us thought they were.

Re: Quinn--he has been nothing less than very impressive in his own right, and the players clearly trust in him and like him. Just my pure speculation, but I think Anderson gets to play this season and then the team deals DA next summer and turns it over to Quinn. And if DA can't cure his INT bug, you're going to see Quinn sooner than later. The mood around that team is they genuinely believe they can win the Super Bowl this year, and they're not afraid to yank DA if they feel Quinn will offer a better chance of that. There is zero chance the team deals Brady Quinn, absolute zero.

Re: Favre--I don't think anyone will trade for him until they are sure he's serious about coming back and not just pulling all this crap to get back at Packers mgt. Your guess is as good as mine if/when that will happen. I believe the suitors, in order, are MIN, TB, CHI, and NYJ, with CAR and WAS as wild cards. There are so many different angles to this whole fiasco and so many good points can be made in so many different veins. I don't buy that he'll ever report to Packers camp, or that he'll accept the $$ they reportedly offered him to go away. If I were Ted Thompson I'd trade him to Chicago and watch him fall flat behind their shaky OL and dreadful WR corps, thus vindicating my position that it was time for him to go. Plus it sets back the Bears rebuild another season, and make no mistake, the Bears are perilously close to a major rebuild.

..and as I typed that I got word Jeff Garcia got carted off with what appears to be a nasty knee injury. I've been working on my Bucs season preview and half of it is based around Garcia (mostly negative). God only knows what Gruden and Bruce Allen do if Garcia is in fact shelved, though I bet Gruden would love nothing more than to throw him on IR and be rid of his headache.

Steelers signed Mitch Berger to punt. I guess he's only 36, I would've guessed closer to 46. Seems like that dude has been punting forever.

couple questions icness since i havent seen much info from u in awhile:

how far off is brandon marshall from getting a half a year to a year suspension? it pisses me off seeing a man of his talent keep getting arrested this offseason. any chance shannahan will release him?

how serious are the cowboys right now trying to find a backup QB?

Why not? It isn't liked you have enough past their prime star players on that squad.

Probably figured why should the Jets have all the fun acquiring pointless late-thirtysomethings.

I thought the Jets started doing that in an effort to emulate their sworn rivals.
