They were already leading 10 at that point and had control of the whole game. The Bills do have the best ST's unit in the league and Dick Jauron felt like at this point they could end the game if they tried something out of the box and they did.

Because they've been practicing those kinds of plays all the time in training camp, plus they have one of the best and most versatile of special teams units in the league

A W in week one is the same as a W in week 17

they where already winning, they didn't need it.
i mean come on, do it when you need it. do it when you are down, do it against a rival, hell do it in the playoffs when it is win or go home.

Just because the Bears have the best returner in all of football, doesn't mean they have the best unit, as well. Devin Hester has done more creating on his own, then his squad has done for him, IMHO.

The problem is, those are the situations where the other team is able to anticipate it (particularly "when you need it") easily. The fact that it was so unorthodox in that situation is probably why it worked.

I agree it was a bit odd timing, but to play devils advocate:
The opposing special teams now have something else to think about and worry about the rest of the season. That takes practice time, it takes coaching time away from everything else. Dick Jauron did the same in his first game as DET coach--ran a fake punt from his own 29 on 4th and 11 and the game already lost. It's one of those "chess" moves and Jauron loves that kind of stuff.

Even though Dick Jauron has used the trick play to his advantage over the past couple of years he always uses it when the Bills need a boost or when it's a big game like the Cowboys last season when he ran a Fake Punt Return and Brian Moorman ran past Cowboys defenders for a first down on their first series.
But this was a little different because the Bills were already up. It was the second time Jauron was pretty aggressive. With time running out before halftime he ran the 2 minute offense. There was like 40 seconds left and all Bill fans were surprised by that. He's known for sitting on the ball in those type of situations, instead he went for it and they got 3 out of it.
Could be a different, "Cagey" Dick Jauron.

who cares? the play was successful and they easily won the game..isn't that all that matters?..
it's an all or nothing play..if they didn't make it, we'd be calling them idiots..if they did, we'd praise them..there are PLENTY of playcalls in the NFL that could qualify as an all or nothing play..

A hang time routinely over 4.5 and a career average better than Moorman's best year... and when Lechler's actually got it in a favorable spot, he's not bad at spotting his punts either... the anti-Raiders slant continues..

If Shane Lechler punted for the Colts or Cowboys they'd have a bust already started in Canton. The two best punters in the league are both in the Bay area. Lechler gets exceptional hang time off a very quick release--they've actually worked with him to slow down so the coverage has a little more time.

Moorman punts in Buffalo which, outside of San Fran, is probably the toughest punting environment in the league.
the anti-Raiders slant continues..
Ha ha, what?
