Matt Millen Fired

Post#1 » by MadCityBucky » Wed Sep 24, 2008 2:26 pm

Millen was informed of the move last night during a late-night high-level meeting. This morning several people within the building confirmed that he had large packing boxes in his office and he made his way around to different employees telling them of the move.

It is unclear if Millen was fired or removed himself from the equation but the news comes just days after Bill Ford, Jr. publicly stated he would have fired the GM if it was his decision but he lacked the authority to do so.

Unfortunate, as non-Lions fan it was quite entertaining that they were holding onto him for so long.

One of the Lions beat writers just confirmed this to me, told me he heard it directly from Bill Ford.

Oh what a joyous day!!!

As a football fan, it needed to happen. It was an embarrassment.

It's been a long time coming. The celebration is scheduled for this afternoon in downtown Detroit.

This is horrible news for Packer fans, the Lions might actually do something productive now.

Great news for Lion fans. Re-joice for now. But how great would it be if they selected Jeremy Maclin WR out of Missouri with their 1st pick.

This has to mean Marinelli is on his way out the door as well.

I expect to hear Bill Cowher's name being floated around here and I think the Lions would give him full control and that's something he might be looking for at this stage in his career.

Just because Millen is out doesn't mean the Lions aren't still a mess. I can't imagine Cowher wanting to take that up when there will probably be half a dozen more attractive coaching vacancies at the end of the season. Maybe I'm wrong.

Two early names being bandied about: Ron Wolf and Floyd Reese. No idea on any validity, but don't expect a quick turnaround on a replacement. One to keep an eye out for: Carl Peterson in Kansas City, who is likely on the way out sooner than later. That's my personal speculation.

Marinelli will remain coach thru this year apparently, but you could bet your balls he's gone the day the season ends. Actually I think he'd probably welcome it, so he can go back to just worrying about his beloved (and crappy) defense.

One intriguing possibility: Tom Izzo, coming on in some sort of capacity. He has entertained the idea before.

A basketball coach running a football team. Just when you think it couldn't get any worse than Millen.

Back when Mariucci was coaching the Lions, Millen and Mooch made a very serious overture to Izzo to become a quality control/assistant GM type. Mooch and Izzo are best friends and Izzo does have a football background. Some folks will tell you he very nearly made the jump back then. He's an icon in Michigan and the franchise appears ready to appease the fanbase as much as possible. Lloyd Carr has been mentioned too, but he has some medical issues that will keep him retired. I doubt Izzo would take over as the GM, but more in an AGM-type role.

That presumes he would walk away from what he's created at MSU, which seems like utter lunacy to me. But stranger things have happened. What more can he really accomplish with the Spartans?

I really don't think it will happen but his name was one of the first that came up. Just heard it mentioned on a syndicated radio show on my way home today too from former Spartan and Lion Ty Hallock.

Maybe the only thing the Lions fans get to cheer over this season.

I'm really curious now. Apart from his war drills, what is Izzo's football background? How could he possibly be considered the best candidate for a NFL GM job, even an Assistant GM job?

Does he realize that having the players do drills in football pads isn't going to be all that revolutionary on a football team?
