Defensive end Bruce Smith, defensive back Rod Woodson and tight end Shannon Sharpe are among first-year candidates for induction into the Pro Football Hall of Fame.
The list includes 110 players, seven coaches and 16 contributors, including former NFL Commissioner Paul Tagliabue and longtime team owners Bud Adams, Jerry Jones, Art Modell and Ralph Wilson.
Hall of Fame selectors will choose 25 candidates who will be announced later this month as semifinalists. The field will then be narrowed to 15 by a mail ballot. The inductees will be selected from among those 15 and the two senior nominees previously announced, Bob Hayes and Claude Humphrey. They were selected in August by a senior selection committee.
The class of inductees will be chosen at the selection committee’s annual meeting on Saturday, January 31, 2009, in Tampa, Fla., the day before the 2009 Super Bowl. As few as four and as many as seven can be selected.
To be considered for Hall of Fame election, a nominated player or coach must be retired for at least five years. A contributor, who has made outstanding career contributions to pro football in capacities other than playing or coaching, may still be active in his pro football career.

It’s a shame that the Hall hasn’t reviewed their enshrinement procedures and allowed more players to be voted in during a given year…or at least separate offensive and defensive players in the voting pool.

Or just have a ban on enshrining QBs, WRs and RBs for a couple of years...
Ray Guy for HoF!

We all know skill positions are way more important than the big uglies.

It’s a sad commentary on the state of the HoF that a guy like Kurt Warner generates more conversation for enshrinement than guys like Charles Haley or Bruce Armstrong.
Although I really don’t want to see the kind of speech Haley would give. Especially if he brings, um, “visuals”.

I can't wait to hear Shannon Sharpe's induction speech.
They'll NEVER put Art Modell into the HOF so long as the induction ceremony is in Canton. And if they do I'll be among the masses that throws bottles of urine at whomever accepts his induction.
Rod Woodson is a no-brainer. Jerry Jones probably is too but not this year.
My 5:
Rod Woodson
Shannon Sharpe
Derrick Thomas
Clay Mathews
Kevin Greene

Aside from the locks (Shannon, Woodson and Smith), I think Cris Carter should get in this time around.
Like Ic said, I can't wait to hear Shannon's speech, and the same goes for Cris'.
Also have to put in my annual vote for Derrick Thomas.

Icness you misspelled Kevin Greene. It's Bruce Smith.

I actually bought out the local Barnes & Noble's stock of it, and plan on bringing it to the bonfire I'm going to tomorrow.

I've read that book about the 90's Cowboys.
Charles Haley is just about the last man I would want to be around.
How about Michael Irvin? How many women did he bang between the Super Bowl bye week? Jeez what a legend in terms of being a man whore.

Whoa there cowboy. I put that quote in my sig because of how true I think it is, not because of humor.

Its pretty simple. Romo has the tendency to play great games, but then makes the fatal mistake that can cost the Cowboys a game (playoffs vs. Seahawks, playoffs vs. Giants), just like Chris Webber.
C'mon stud, I know you can't be this annoyed by a dumb joke I made?
