LaDainian Tomlinson could be traded in the offseason

Post#1 » by HMFFL » Fri Dec 5, 2008 12:47 am

The San Diego Union-Tribune suggests that LaDainian Tomlinson could be traded in the offseason.
Tomlinson has a monster contract that would have to be redone to facilitate a deal. He also turns 30 before next season and will be coming off his worst year as a pro, so his trade value is weak. While GM A.J. Smith could draft LT's heir apparent in April, expect to see him back in powder blue in 2009.

I guess the Chargers will tank and try to draft Chris Wells. I dont see the Chargers trading LT any time soon.

I hope nooooot, we need DEFENSE. I would love one of the So Cal boys who are already playing in southern cal, either Rey Maualuga or Taylor Mays. And i wouldn't mind big Terrence Cody from Bama to come in and learn from aging Jamal Williams and ultimately take over the Nose soon.

When was the last time a player of Tomlinson’s stature was actually traded? Has a trade of that potential magnitude actually happened in the salary cap era?

I wish rumormongers would take into account the extreme difficulty it takes to trade a star player in the NFL when they come up with these ideas. T’aint baseball.

Good luck making the trade if you're the Chargers. Just cut LT if they figure he's no longer the RB they wish to run with in the forseeable future.

This is a good thing for the Chargers because they arent gonna go any were for a couple years so its time to rebuild. So trading LT would make sense

Huh? I think they are still very talented and adding Merriman back and a good 1st round pick this year will surely propel this team back in the playoffs..especially in that weak division

Yea, it seems like it's been forever since an NFL icon, someone capable of an MVP type season, making a ton of money has been dealt....

You're really comparing Favre, a player that had previously retired and bent his former team over without lube, and is 38 years old, to an expensive MVP still potentially in his peak years? Uh yeah, I guess.

Its not really a comparison, you asked when the last time a player of that magnitude was traded, as if its a very unusual occurrence, when it just happened a few months ago with Favre.

I suppose LT could be traded, but why on earth would the Chargers do that? He's not the primary reason (poor defensive responsibility), the secondary (extremely inconsistent OL play), or even tertiary (lousy attention to detail by the coaches that bleeds into the players) why they stink this year.

Having said that...
I would at least try to deal him if I"m AJ Smith. He's clearly at the very end of his usefulnesss, and history has not been kind to teams that held onto fading stars a year or two too long. But I would only deal him if I got a feature back in free agency or in the draft. Or perhaps as a tool to obtain a feature back in the draft and get more along with it. But BBJ is right, it's damn hard to deal a player with his salary and status without big-time extenuating circumstances (see: Favre or Moss or Shockey).

I would bet an adult beverage of your choice that Favre has a better 2009 than LT, compared to the league average for their positions
It's not whether you win or lose, it's how good you look playing the game

Well I , for one, am a supporter of 7-win teams winning the AFC West every year.

Yeah, poorly-worded on my part. I didn’t mean stature in name, but more in “stars in their prime”.

Tomlinson isn't that good anymore..I no longer fear him being in my division..

I hope he doesn't win a ring though, he doesn't deserve it..he's a whiner on and off the field and is probably the biggest sore loser in the NFL..he yells at his teammates on the sidelines..he complains about the Patriots when his team is full of guys that celebrate excessively and are dirtbags(Rivers and Merriman for instance)..

LT looks like his old self against Denver tonight.
