T.J. Houshmandzadeh's Future

Cincinnati has a Pro Bowl wide receiver about to become a free agent and a franchise tag at its disposal. But don’t look for the Bengals to slap the tag on free-agent-to-be wideout T.J. Houshmandzadeh.

Last year Cincinnati used its franchise tag — and the corresponding $7.455 million salary — on offensive tackle Stacy Andrews. But on one of Sunday’s final plays during Cincinnati’s win over Cleveland, Andrews damaged his right knee enough that it will impact his value on the free-agent market, and it could likely mean the Bengals no longer will franchise him.

So the Bengals could throw Andrews’ former tag on Houshmandzadeh, yet a league source said Cincinnati wouldn’t. Houshmandzadeh is 31 years old, and if Cincinnati wants him, it will attempt to sign him to a long-term deal, something it previously has tried to do but failed.

But don’t look for Andrews’ tag to go on Houshmandzadeh.

The Bengals could look a whole lot different next season...
Stacy Andrews will be gone, replaced by Anthony Collins at RT. Collins has outplayed expectations at LT but his future is on the right.

Ced Benson will be back, but he's probably the only RB on the roster or IR who will be back. An orange birdie tells me they are strongly considering drafting two RBs, or at least one and bringing in some UDFAs. Doesn't look like their 1st round pick will be an RB though. Expect LT with the 1st rounder unless Aaron Curry is on the board, then they have a decision to make.

Both TJ and Ocho Cinco sure look like they're on the way out. 100% guarantee that at least one will be gone, and bet on it being Housh--his league-wide perception is much better than Ocho CInco.

Levi Jones is thinking about retirement. IMO it's a ploy to get out of Cincy, but that's just a semi-educated guess.

The entire LB corps is going to be shaken up. It might be some of the same guys in different spots, or it might be Keith Rivers and 2-3 new guys starting with him.

Early indications are the Bengals are going to be quite active in trying to acquire many draft picks, which could mean an auctioing off of Ocho CInco, Housh, and a couple other semi-useful guys (Thornton, Geathers).

The 49ers would probably love to have him and so would Oakland.

They would be smart to play the draft this year because there's a lot to like about this draft. Its depth is really impressive, especially in many areas where the Bengals are weak. I wouldn't be surprised if they draft 2 RBs but I hope they don't; they need at least three, and Cedric Benson shouldn't be drawing a paycheck anymore.

LT would be useful but I'd like to see the Bengals trade down and draft Alex Mack or Max Unger and collect some 2nd-3rd rounders.

Bumping since it's still active and the talk should continue until he's signed.

Housh believes he's out of Cincy

Impending free agent T.J. Houshmandzadeh said he hasn't heard from the Bengals, "which would lead me to assume that I'm out there."
Housh believes the Bengals can still win, "but a lot of changes have to occur." Though the team would prefer not to franchise him at $9.88 million, it may be the only way to keep the hot commodity in stripes. Once he makes it to free agency, Housh is sure to receive an offer more attractive than staying with a dysfunctional franchise.

My best bet would be TJ ending up with the Eagles or the Ravens. Ravens got an up and coming QB in Flacco. I think TJ would love to play with a guy like Flacco. The Eagles would be a good fit because TJ is more of a possession receiver. In Reid's West Coast offense, a possession receiver like TJ is vital. Also the Eagles are a playoffs team, maybe a SB contender if they can add right pieces during the off-season.

T.J. Houshmandzadeh continues to let Eagles fans know he’s interested in playing in Philadelphia if the team wants him.

The latest move was a text message sent to radio station ESPN 950 that read: “I don’t know what’s gonna happen, if they want me I will be an Eagle tomorrow.”

How TJ handles the media when answering to Ciny questions is very classy.

I see him going to Philadelphia, with all the pieces the Eagles have this could be the move that finally gets them a Superbowl win for McNabb.

OK, so youre wondering if the Eagles could possibly sign not one but two Cincinnati Bengals this off-season?

Don't count on it.

Tackle Stacy Andrews appears on the verge of signing with the Eagles, but dont expect wide receiver T.J. Houshmandzadeh to do the same.

Sources have told Gunn that Houshmandzadeh's agent, Kennard McGuire, called the Eagles on Friday and claimed his client was willing to sacrifice salary in order to play in Philadelphia.

But after doing their due diligence, the Eagles discovered that McGuire was actually asking more from them than he was from other teams.

Go figure.

The Eagles, who had little interest in Houshmandzadeh to begin with, told McGuire theyre not interested in the 31-year-old, eight-year veteran.
