On the eve of free agency, some teams are positioned too well, and others not so well. Based on numbers gathered Thursday — and these are fluid, changing with each roster move that each team makes — here are the teams with the most and least salary-cap room heading into the start of free agency.

Tampa Bay — $61 million
Kansas City — $57 million
Philadelphia — $48 million
Denver — $37 million
Green Bay — $34 million

LEAST
Carolina — $1.9 million
New England — $3.2 million
Indianapolis — $6.6 million
Pittsburgh — $7.4 million
Washington — $8.1 million

I think that is before the bump to 127. So Carolina and NE might have more.

Speaking of those two teams, damn, Cassel and Peppers tags are certainly handicapping them.

And how is Washington going to get Haynesworth with so little cap? Can they sign him, be over the cap and then release someone like Springs a couple days later?

His contract will probably be signing bonus heavy, and be heavily backloaded to fit it in this year's cap.

I think those numbers were before the cap got bumped up, but the rankings don't change.

Don't forget the Panthers had two 1st round picks last year, which always crushes the cap the following offseason. Otah and Stewart each have $5M roster bonuses that are 100% cap hits on top of their annual deals. It looks like they front-loaded Gross' bonuses in his deal too. They don't have a first rounder this year so that helps them down the line. I heard they were reworking Gamble's new deal too and that should give them $3-4M more.

WAS would release Todd Collins to free up space too if needed. Shawn Springs too.

It will be real interesting to see how the teams with beau coup cap $$ spend. Some agents are more than a little worried that teams are going to use the poor economy as an excuse for not shelling out big contracts. I wonder if some teams (TB springs to mind) are really doing okay financially. I know I will be real curious about financial viability if TB, BUF, and DEN don't spend a lot.

Washington has about $13 million in cap space IIRC.

Tampa may have all that cap space and they are not going to do anything with it. It pisses me off so much, you have massive amounts of cap space to improve your team and you're just gonna sit on it? Philly does it every year. Every year they have $20+ million in cap room and they do nothing.

philly's not afraid to spend money. you have a real dan snyder mind, just because you have cap room doesnt mean you have to piss it all away, especially if you dont find the players a good fit, plus teams like tampa and kansas city are rebuilding

Philly is not stupid. They wouldn't sign a crap CB for 6 year $54 million.
They did sign a good CB in Samuel and went after Moss last year. It's just that the free agent field is below spectacular.

They let the heart and soul of their team leave b/c they didn't want to offer him a 2 year deal.

Apparently signing Stacy Andrews will take such a massive hit on their cap they can't sign TJ.

CHEAP.

They have a lot of money to spend and yet they still won't fix their biggest area of need which is a wide receiver. Every year its the same song and dance and they fail to improve that area. Absolutely mind boggling.
