St. Louis Rams are shopping Pace, Holt

Post#1 » by HMFFL » Mon Mar 2, 2009 6:13 am

As the frantic first weekend of free agency winds down, all has been quiet with regards to Rams wide receiver Torry Holt and offensive tackle Orlando Pace.

General manager Billy Devaney indicated Friday that the Rams, in theory, had enough cap room to sign center Jason Brown, safety James Butler, and re-sign cornerback Ron Bartell without having to tap into the $14 million that would be created by releasing or trading Pace and Holt.

For now, Pace and Holt remain Rams, but league sources are convinced that the team is shopping both players as trade bait. Perhaps the thinking is that once the early buying spree calms down, there will be a market for Pace and Holt _ even if it’s a mid_ to late-round pick.

The club has been extremely tight-lipped on the futures of Holt and Pace. Then again, they’ve hardly said they fit into the team’s plans in 2009. At the NFL Scouting Combine, coach Steve Spagnuolo said only that the Rams would do what’s best for the team.

On Friday, Devaney said he didn’t know what would happen with Pace and Holt. Both are seven-time Pro Bowlers and veterans of two Super Bowls with the Rams.

Pace's medical history makes him very unlikely to be dealt, though he's in great shape right now. Note that by my saying he's unlikely to be dealt, he's probably just been traded to San Diego for a 5th round pick...

This is what I hate about the NFL. No franchise loyalty. Treat Pace like the Ram he is.

I'd love to see Torry Holt in a Colts uniform.

Wouldn't mind using Holt as a rental for a year or two to replace Plax.

I could only see Holt realistically going to the Eagles or Vikings. Both lost on the Houshmandzadeh sweepstakes and could use a legit WR. I'll throw the Redskins in there just because you can never count them out. Do I think they'll trade for him? Heck no, but counting them out is something I learned not to do.

I don't see why the Rams would want to do this though. When you think St. Louis Rams all you think of is Faulk, Pace, Holt, Bruce, and to a lesser extent Warner. As Rooster said, show some loyalty.

With Holt, yes they should show loyalty. He could have left for greener pastures a couple of times but stayed and he's the guy I identify as the greatest Ram ever. But for Pace, they've stood by beyond all reasonable expectations for him to come back and he hasn't proven he can do it. If they want to try to get anything back for that, they should IMO. I think it will come later on, when some contender gets a camp injury or something and Pace as a stopgap looks appealing.

Holt is on record that he's always wanted to play for his hometown Panthers, and they have an opening with DJ Hackett gone.

the greatest ram ever? thats a good one to ponder. but i'd have to say it is a LA ram, jackie slater. 2nd, marshall faulk, 3rd kurt warner, 4th isaac bruce, then tori holt.

Eric Dickerson should be in that conversation as well.

I expected suggestions of Sam Anno, John Arnett, Bill Bain, Jack Banta, Peat Beathard, Mel Bleeker, Bill Bowers, Willie Brown, Rudy Bukich, Steve Busick, Mac Byrd... I planned on putting an exhaustive list, more Trojans have played from the Rams than I would have guessed and I've got things to do.

FYI, Ron Yary is the only Trojan/Ram in the HOF.

I'm never going to get those five minutes of my life back.

Jackie Slater is certainly worthy of argument for the greatest Ram. Ron Yary too, and I always forget about him. I'd put Pace up there as well but I have a decided bias towards him.

Ron Yary was only a Ram for one year. He could be the greatest player to ever play for the Rams, but he's not the greatest Ram.

tory still has some play left in him to be a threat, samething with Pace. I think both of them could make an impact on any team they go to.

No love for Jack Youngblood?

As for Holt, best Ram ever? He's not even the best WR on their Superbowl team. I'd probably give the honour to Pace regardless.

If Pace can't come back, he should retire. NFL players need to get this into their heads. I don't know... the idea of him being cut just repulses me.
