Dallas police: Officer drew gun during traffic stop of NFL player outside hospital

The Dallas Police Department confirmed Thursday that an officer drew a gun on NFL running back Ryan Moats and his wife after he stopped them to give them a ticket even as they begged to hurry to the bedside of their dying mother.

As he rushed his family to the hospital, Ryan Moats, 26, rolled through a red light. A Dallas police officer pulled their SUV over outside the emergency room at the Baylor Regional Medical Center at Plano.

“He was pointing a gun at me as soon as I got out of the car,” said his wife, Tamishia Moats. “It was the weirdest feeling because I’ve never had a gun pointed at me before under those circumstances.”

Seconds later, Ryan Moats and his wife explained that her mother was dying inside the hospital.

“You really want to go through this right now?” Moats pleaded. “My mother-in-law is dying. Right now!”

So he didn't even make it to the room on time.

“She said that the mom’s dying right now, and she’s wanting to know if they can get him up there before she dies.”

“All right,” Powell replied. “I’m almost done.”

Powell's voiced sounded like he didn't even give a damn.

As Moats signed the ticket, Powell continued his lecture.

“Attitude’s everything,” he said. “All you had to do is stop, tell me what was going on. More than likely, I would have let you go.”

A police officer was placed on administrative leave Thursday over a traffic stop involving an NFL player whom he kept in a hospital parking lot and threatened to arrest while his mother-in-law died inside the building.

Well I hope that made the cop feel good about himself. When the other cop came to explain what was going on and all he had to say was "I'm almost done". He should really lose his job.

At least the Dallas Chief of Police has stepped up and taken action. I saw an interview with him on Fox News this morning and he was legitimately ticked off at the officer and sincere in his apology to Moats.

Zach Thomas: Same Dallas officer mistreated my wife

Robert Powell, the Dallas police officer who delayed Houston Texans running back Ryan Moats’ and his family while they were trying to get to the hospital to say goodbye to Moats’ mother-in-law on her deathbed, reportedly detained former Dallas Cowboys linebacker Zach Thomas’ wife on traffic violations last year for five hours.

In the wake of Powell being rebuked and placed on administrative leave for his misconduct toward the Moats family that was captured on video, Maritza Thomas came forward to discuss her run-in with Powell, telling her story to Todd Archer of the Dallas Morning News.

Pulled over in 2008 for an illegal U-turn, Thomas was given five tickets by Powell with four of them later dismissed. And she was handcuffed and taken to jail. There is no video of the incident.

“This in no way compares to what happened to Ryan Moats and his family,” Thomas told the Morning News. “But we wanted to tell our story, not knowing how many others have been affected by Officer Powell. We know the vast majority of the Dallas police force are good and professional people, but this guy just seems excessive.”

Ultimately, the following charges were dismissed against Zach Thomas’ wife: not having a registration sticker, improper address on a driver’s license, running a stoplight, and failure to display proof of insurance. http://www.dallasnews.com/sharedcontent ... cf949.html

Cop who stopped NFL player in hospital lot resigns

“I made this decision in the hope that my resignation will allow the Dallas Police Department, my fellow officers and the citizens of Dallas to better reflect on this experience, learn from the mistakes made, and move forward,” Powell said in a statement issued through his attorneys.

He had stopped Houston Texans running back Ryan Moats’ SUV outside Baylor Regional Medical Center in suburban Plano after the vehicle rolled through a red light.

The officer pulled out his gun and threatened Moats with jail as the player and his family pleaded to be allowed to go inside the hospital. Powell continued writing Moats a ticket and lecturing him even after a fellow officer confirmed that Moats’ mother-in-law was dying.

Jonetta Collinsworth, 45, died of breast cancer before Powell allowed Moats to go inside the hospital.

Powell’s resignation was first reported by Dallas-Fort Worth television station KTVT. He later issued an apology, and Moats said he would accept it.

“I still hope to speak with the Moats family to personally express my deep regret, sympathy, and to apologize for my poor judgment and unprofessional conduct,” he said in the Wednesday statement.
