CUTLER Trade: Denver gets 3 picks and QB

Post#1 » by daddyfivestar » Thu Apr 2, 2009 9:49 pm

I didn't think it'd happen but Denver gets a boatload in 2 firsts, a 3rd, and a QB that can start for a season.

Denver can get a QB and Defensive player with the firsts and will have 48, 79, 85 as well.

Cutler and a 5th going out.

Wow.

Broncos need to draft a QB with one of the first round picks because Orton isn't the long-term answer, but not a bad deal for them given their position.

Excellent trade for Denver only if the picks end up being good. Time will tell. I also like it for Chicago because they now have a QB they can rely on for many years.

I'd have to disagree with Reina on this one... D+ for Denver, come on. First of all, pilfering two 1sts in this from anybody is worthy of a C at minimum. After the whole media playout of this fiasco, I am surprised any team ponied up two 1sts.
Orton is blasted by him as backup caliber out of one side of the mouth while the Bears overachieving near playoff run is praised out of the other side and Orton was the one at the helm. I don't think Orton is great or terrible but he is just a 1 or 2 yr placeholder for whichever 1st rounder the Broncos select.
Yes, Chicago will be dangerous in a division where 10-6 makes the playoffs, but Cutler couldn't make the playoffs at 8-8 (with a much better offensive unit surrounding him) so let's not yet "Crown 'Em" in the words of Denny Green.

#18 in this draft, 16 starts from a decent QB, probably somewhere around #21 to 24 next year along with something like #84 as well.... not bad at all.

Good deal for both teams, I think. Although I wonder how Cutler will do behind the worst O line in the NFC.

Two 1sts and a 3rd? That's a lot to give up.

I wouldn't throw away the difference in offenses here. Better running game in Denver, better offensive line (much better), better weapons in receivers and tight ends.

Um, the Bears have one of the very best Tight end tandems in the league with Olsen and Clark.

And while the offensive line appeared to be a disaster going into last year, they did a very nice job overall compared to expectations in pass protection. So far, the Bears have replaced the outgoing John St. Clair (to the Browns) and John Tait (retirement) with Frank Omiyale (from Carolina), Kevin Shaffer (from Cleveland), Orlando Pace (from St. Louis) and Chris Williams (first round pick last year who ws hurt for most of 2008). The Bears have done a lot this offseason, albeit quietly, to upgrade their offensive line.

There's no doubt that we would ideally want more/better talent on the line of possible, but it's just not feasible to have elite talent at every position on the field. We definitely need another wide receiver or two but don't underrate Hester as he made some nice strides last season. Cliff Levingston expects us to make a play for Holt now which would be a big, short-term help.

The most important thing is that the Bears just got one of the best young QBs in the game, and considering Jerry Angelo has a pretty poor 1st round draft history, it's really not the exhorbinant price some people think it is.

This is a good deal for both teams IMO. The Bears normally screw up their 1st round picks anyways and Angelo usually finds his gems later in the draft so I'm not bitter about losing 2 first rounders. The Orlando Pace addition is good too. Chris Williams will move over to the other side now.

Denver probably got much more than they were hoping, how is this a D+ for them?

Hmmm....I originally thought Denver was giving us an additional third. I think this helped us sign Orlando Pace(who may or may not be able to keep healthy) and depending on how we do this year, I will be skeptical.

AT least now I won't revolt when the Bears offense comes onto the field.

I hate to see this actually happen, but this situation reeks of the Jeff George saga. You have to like it for both teams, Bronco's might actually be able to build a defense now.

He's going from throwing the ball to Brandon Marshall, Eddie Royal and Brandon Stokely to Brandon Lloyd, Devin Hester and a random scrub.

Brandon Lloyd isn't on the team anymore. Try again.

Greg Olsen and Desmond Clark make up one of the best TE tandems in the NFL and Matt Forte is an excellent receiver as well.
