Yeah, no, actually not at all strange.

Michael Jackson, for instance, has thousands of things in his life you could choose to consider important in this sort of thing. Find 8 of them that relate to the number 7 isn't hard at all.

Let's say three of some five facts you read in some Michael Jackson article relate to 7 in some way. Check the list and realize how many numbers are in each of those facts; it wouldn't be unlikely for that to happen. But because you only picked out 7 from all of these numbers, that won't occur to you, so you start looking at other Michael Jackson facts to see if the number is important. In order for you to find another 5 examples, if we were to assume there are an average of just two usable digits in each fact, you would only have to look through, on average, 25* facts (5 facts needed divided by 2 digits per fact times 10 possible digits) to find your proof that the number 7 is relevant. Given a predisposition to finding 7 relevant, however, you won't notice that every other digit has also come up 5 times in those 25 facts.

In short, people are hardwired stupid in this way.


*Well, 25 isn't actually right for the digit 7, but to explain this takes a while, and the difference isn't huge, iirc. The short version is that smaller digits come up more often.
